Where’s the motorboats?

There always have been boats that are not used.
One such boat has been moved from near us which has improved the outlook for a few weeks .

Exactly Jake!
A good friend of mine maintains I should rent rather than buy….a similar mathematical model to yours was used on him before to change his mind!

I think its fair to include days using the boat for its accommodation when trying to make sense of costs. We spend a lot more time on the boat when it is moored compared to the time spent moving.
We may well spend weekends or longer holidays aboard . The boat does not necessarily move every day.
We do make journeys of course and average about 90 engine hours a year over the last 9 years in our present boat.

I would say we have about 70 days when we also stay overnight on board per year and that comes to an average of £100 per day of use of which an average of £20 is fuel.

I guess you could do plenty of other things with £100 per day.
However owning and using a boat has been a real escape from the pressures of working life and has included adventures that we would not have otherwise done.

A key element of man maths is not working out what it costs unless you absolutely have to! 😉

I genuinely don't know exactly what it costs us each year to run the boat or how long we spend on it other than knowing that it is an intrinsic element of our lives and I know that thankfully we can afford what we do. I have to be honest and say that it would suck the joy out of it if I had to work out what each day cost us.

For us boating is what we do and love so cost / affordability is only relevant in determining the size and type of boat we have.

...a crisp start on a summer morning, the sun just below the horizon and the promise of a warm day to come.
Wx ...light breeze for your entire day or journey.
..most of the boat is working and the tanks and the fridge are full.
...engines have started first time and ropes are singled up....
If you have Volvos...the smoke is finally clearing :)
...you have just found your special boat sunglasses...
..the crew expertly let go and shout up to enquire if the shorepower is still supposed to be connected.
the day and the world is yours.

Priceless ?

Simply the weather for us. We decided to haul her out and keep her out longer than expected to get more done. With the weather hardly playing ball, we don't feel that we're missing out. I set a healthy fuel budget each year and we've always stuck to it, so this year will be no different and we'll do all that we plan if the wind and rain subsides!

We we’re due to come to the boat on Wednesday for a week , looked at the temps a week at less than 10 deg, so we are off to Tenerife .
You always were a wuss. Time for you to come back where you belong. The funbox is drier than the Gobi desert at the moment.

The weather forecast is no so great for the weekend .
But we aim to be out on the boat . Its just a matter of wearing appropriate clothing.

I don't usually think about the costs with any accuracy .
But now I estimated it back to a coat per day it doesn't seem so bad
And next year I hope to cut the cost in half by using the boat twice as much.

Today on my news feed this came up, a bit dated as it happened on 6th April
Luxury yacht worth thousands which was housed in marina for years sinks after sale

A luxury yacht which left Brighton after years in the marina has sunk shortly after being sold.
The Astor, one of the largest yachts in the marina, had previously sat there for several years but was sold in January.
However, after sailing in waters near Rye shortly before Easter, the yacht capsized with the crew needing to be saved by a coastguard helicopter.
The boat, a Vitech 90 type dating back to 1993, was estimated to be worth between £100,000 and £450,000.
