when will this start leaking?

It will leak.

The mistake you made (from what I could see on the video) was to fully tighten the screws before the sealant had cured. By partially tightening the screws and letting the sealant cure forms a gasket, then fully tighten the screws and you should have a water tight seal.

I tightened the bolts until the voids in the snakes of sealant had gone

then stopped

we shall see

The ports on my boat are fixed on in the same way; when I got it they leaked - not enough sealant, it had all been squeezed out. When I resealed them I put washers on the screws between the acrylic and the hull, then you can tighten them down and leave a thick enough band of sealant...

great plan

that is a brilliant idea

this is a test bed

so the super duck will be much better

Window in the Duck Punt

My first thought was of horror. Cutting a hole in a perfectly good punt to photograph fishes.
I don't think this will be a success. Anyway a man has to do what his bright ideas lead him to do.
A dinghy on the beach near mine has a window in the bottom a bit like yours. Over the years the acrylic has gone opaque and now cracked in the sun. Obviously the dinghy is not used anymore!
A water proof camera might have been a better idea IMHO.
Anyway good luck with it. No it won't leak. I hope the fish are cooperative. Try dangling a bag of food outside the window. Like they do for sharks. olewill

I favour rubber o-rings rather than washers. They permit further tightening after ther sealant has set which the washer technique does not.
Also, I think I would have used twice as many screws. But more can be added later if required I suppose.

I have a waterproof camera

and it does a great job

but you cannot really see what it is filming

this way I should be able to have more control over what I am capturing

thanks for calling the punt perfectly good

and it is the first time I have cut a window in a boat so I was worried about the desecration

but it only took a week to build

superduck will be a much better made and lighter boat

Given that there will always be more light camera side of the window than fish side, how will you deal with reflections off the window?

Easy.

That will be his next project along with how to water proof them !

Check out the the MoBo forum, they consider u/w lights to be an essential boating item. There is even a dealer that posts there. But be warned thet prices are in line with other top of the range MoBo equipment. Oh & Dylan will need 3x110ah batteries & a generator in his punt to power them.

I have a better idea, why doesn't Dylan build a submarine. James Cameron managed to build one.

actually

the punt seems to go better with more weight aboard

so it could easily take all that stuff

my son sailed the punt on sunday both by himelf and with my daughter

downwind the extra weight made almost no difference - but going upwind the estra weight made it go faster

http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/bl...it-turns-out-to-be-a-bit-of-a-weight-carrier/

deeper in the water, better bite on the chine, rig more upright, catches more wind, goes faster

seriously chaps the duck punt is one amazing little boat

build one before you get too old to enjoy sailing it

just to remind you here are the mersea blokes having fun

http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/blogs/lurch-and-the-west-mersea-men-dylan-winter-feb-3/

how many of you chaps have actually sailed to the top of the river or estuary where you keep your boat?

Dylan

PS at a pinch it can do duty as a tender
