The leather wheel cover on our jeanneau 37 is in need of replacement. I would like to replace it with suede if possible. Does anybody know of any companies that supply these covers for D.I.Y fitment as my wife is reasonably competent with a needle. Any suggestions would be gratefully received

Measure the diameter of the wheel and the size of the outer rim (it will be one inch or one and a quarter or similar) and then phone Whitlock steering (not Whitlock Southern) and they will send you the correct kit. You then need to learn how to do a locking cross stitch and once mastered you will make a professional job. Big secret is to get colored double sided tape and put this on the wheel rim before adding the cover. This holds the leather cover in place and you just sew away happily.

Before you finally decide, take a look at the Boat Leather website (www.boatleather.com) where you'll find a huge range of colours and types of leather. I bought a kit from them this year, and it included excellent instructions, waxed thread, needles, etc. The kit arrived very quickly from the States, and the Post Office collects the VAT/duty on delivery. The leather is pre-punched, making sewing very easy. They also offer a foam-padded version (which was the one I bought) and this makes the wheel feel much chunkier and more comfortable. The only cautionary note I'd make is that some of the colours are prone to fading as a result of UV exposure, so ask Boat Leather's advice on this before finalising colour choice.
