What's in a name?.....your boat.

Our boat name was suggested by the mother in law and therefore I couldn't refuse of course

As mentioned on the naming thread our "Oranya" has had her name since 1969 and I can't find the origin. I came across a local company (now defunct) with the same name but I have since found out the company was named after the boat (director owned the boat at the time) so still no closer. I guess it may be a mix of names that meant something to the original owner - any other ideas?

Interesting thread. Our first boat was a trailer runaround we named 'The Whippet'. It wasn't a real speed boat but we thought it fast - and I've usually had a whippet or three in the house since childhood. Boat number two we named 'Lady Louise', my daughter and sister share the name, and the Lady part kind of suited the vessel's styling. Our current mobo came with the 'The Great Escape' name. It's rather a longer name than I/we would have chosen but much brainstorming failed to produce anything more apt. If I were lucky enough to get my hands on a brand new boat again I'd like to call it/her Eironeia.

Hunros means 'Dream' in Cornish.

I couldn't resist trying to reflect the Cornish flag within the name.

One of our first baots was a 35' Cougar Predator. Long, sleek and fast (50 kts!), we called her L'eau Profile.

When the family was trying to find a name for our next boat, the youngest suddenly said, 'It's Dad's new toy. It must be Play d'eau !

A few years back I lost my Mum to Motor Neurone Disease. Dad asked afterwards that if I ever changed boats I'd name the new one after her. He wanted "Isle of May" as a sort of play on words because if you say it quickly it sounds like I love May.

Life has its ups and downs, and the up side was that last year I finally had the ability to significantly upgrade boats. The down side was that Dad passed away only a few months before it became a reality.

I kept my promise and our Broom 42 CL now proudly carries the name "Isle of May".
