What\'s happened to Opal Marine\'s Website?

If you go to

<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.opalmarine.com/>http://www.opalmarine.com/</A>

You get a NetNames page saying:
<font color=red>"The domain name opalmarine.co.uk has been registered by NetNames for one of our clients."</font color=red>

NetNames appear to be the technical contact for opalmarine.com, while they are NOT the agent/registrar for opalmarine.co.uk.

Whoops . . . I should think they'll be very popular.

Try this instead...

All the Opal ads quote <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.opalmarine.co.uk>www.opalmarine.co.uk</A> - which is probably why the .com address doesn't work!

Yes of course - I really AM that stupid . . . how STUPID of me . . .

Obviously you didn't bother trying the .co.uk before you jumped in there - the .co.uk goes to the same place and gives the same message.

A WhoIs lookup shows that opalmarine.com is actually registered to Opal Marine - through Netnames.

opalmarine.co.uk is registered to another outfit, Peak Net Limited, via a different company - GXN. opalmarine.co.uk therefore has no tangible connection with either Netnames or Opal Marine.

Presumably whoever owned the .co.uk had been letting Opal use it. However, now all seems to have gone sadly awry and both addresses point to the same NetNames holding page.

Clear as mud...

Haven't a clue what WhoIs or Netnames are!

However, it's true that Opal Marine publish www.opalmarine.co.uk in their ads as their website address, as I said. As far as I know, that's the only website address they've ever used. Quite why you should have been looking for www.opalmarine.com is another question.

In any case, you'll note that I didn't accuse you of being stupid (or even STUPID) - that's your interpretation alone.

Re: Clear as mud...

I do know that Opal usually use opalmarine.co.uk - I have several listings for them on my own website, and discovered the problem when trying to access the .co.uk

However, Opal actually own opalmarine.com, which would normally be set to forward to opalmarine.co.uk - i.e. anyone looking for opalmarine.com would end up at opalmarine.co.uk

When I found that opalmarine.co.uk was not working and that it was in fact registered to a company other than Opal Marine, I checked the .com - knowing that it was registered to Opal. It still forwards to the .co.uk - which no longer works!

Your statement

'Quite why you should have been looking for www.opalmarine.com is another question.'

has now been answered. I thought that its tone again implied that I was a bit simple minded - but perhaps I am just oversensitive . . .

WhoIs is a facility available to anyone which enables one to look up certain details of a domain name, including the owner.

NetNames are the internet service provider who host the domain opalmarine.co.uk. They do not host/maintain the .com, which is maintained and/or hosted by another company.

Hope this is less muddy now.

That's 'cos it's fixed now Nigel -

Things happen fast where the internet is concerned. However, it will still have been pretty significant to Opal.

I guess that means this thread won't be going much further . . .

WhoIs?

That "WhoIs" business you mentioned is really good! Tells you where people live, phone numbers (740589) and loads of other stuff. Thanks.

Re: WhoIs?

Yes, it's pretty useful . . . although it can seem a bit big-brotherish I think it helps maintain a level of confidence that the net needs.

Not sure which WhoIs lookup you used, but am intrigued . . . that's one of the two extra analogue phone numbers that comes with our BT Home Highway ISDN line, but I had to look at a phone bill to confirm that as no-one uses it and I have never given it out. To tell you the truth, I don't even know if it works for incoming calls. Which WhoIs did you use?

And so - bizarrely - the thread continues . . .

Re: WhoIs?

It's amazing what you can discover from public domain information sources.
There was a chap here recently boasting about the fact that he was the MD of an international company. A quick search on 192 and company house gave me his home address and the real size of his company, and several off us exchanged infomation on him by PM and didn't bother replying to him thereafter.

Re: Public Domain Info

Between Companies House, 192 and WhoIs you should be able to check up on just about anyone with a domain name or a limited company. One other thing that I wish was publicly verifiable is the inflated claims people make about the number of hits their website gets, but sadly there's no way of doing this.

Anyone know any other useful public domain sources that can help us track down the b...s.....rs?

The fact that it's possible to look bigger on the web than you actually are is a bit of a two-edged sword. I wish all the companies who send me endless junk mail - particularly from the USA - would bother doing a few checks themselves instead of assuming I am the MD of a company worth sending their junk to . . .

[I even get investment bankers and brokers phoning me from the US touting for business - I usually help them run up their phone bill a bit before disappointing them].

I've started using Mailwasher now, which will hopefully begin to make a dent in the junk e-mail.

Website statistics...

Agree with you there; but I guess people inflate their website stats to try to encourage advertisers.

Out of interest, how many visitors a day do you get on Bluemoment.Com?

Re: Website statistics...

I've sent you a PM - I don't think this is an appropriate place to give out this info, and I'm sure Kim would agree. Anyone else who is curious can PM me, although it's not that interesting . . .
