It allows the boat to go at trolling speed, i.e 5/6 knots without the engine labouring at tick over speeds. Mainly useful in the "game fish" part of the world.

Ben,
Only available on certain gearbox models and need to be treated with care. You drop the pressure to the clutch plates and allow a degree of slip, however involves fitting a throttle interlock preventing you from opening throttle whilst gearbox is operating at lower pressure. Open the throttle when gearbox is dumping pressure simply toasts the clutch pack.
You cannot make Borg Warner Velvet Drive 71/72 work with trolling valves however their Liberty Series is adaptable, suspect the Twin Disc boxes you have can be adapted.
