What to do with my old anchor chain?

I have 60m of 10mm chain that is too far gone in a few sections to re galvanise. I have some replacement coming that will go on the main anchor at the front. I have a couple of kedge type anchors with small lengths of chain on in the sail locker. I imagine I will be left with up to 30m of useable chain. Is it worth keeping the good bits of the old chain? Either as a back up or mounting longer sections onto the spare anchors. Or is it too much weight to be carrying around?

Thanks
Guy

Keep some short lengths to use to wrap round trees or rocks in the event you need to use shore lines.

You know how often you use your second rode - if often, maybe use the longest good piece of chain for your spare rode - but 10mm handled by hand seems hard work.

Does Singapore have scrap, metal, merchants?

You obviously considered re-galvanising - is it an easy project based in Singapore?

I think I should be able to dispose of it fairly easily. It was too far gone to re galvanise but I think it can be done without too much difficulty here. Maybe the question should have been what chain if any do people use on their spare anchors.

My kedge has 10m on it, approximately the length of the boat, which was indeed cut from the good end of the partly-very-rusty chain that was originally on the main anchor.

If it was truly a "spare anchor" for cruising places further afield than the central English Channel, I might want something a bit more substantial, though.

About 5 metres of 8 mm chain on my Fortress kedge. The problem with using old chain with poor galvanising is that it may lie unused for long periods, leaving rust stains where they are a real nuisance. On my mooring buoy strop that lives in the anchor locker where it is always wet I have considered buying stainless chain. Rusting of the chain weakens the rope spliced to it. Of course, it might be that crevice corrosion would kill the chain instead!
