What stops open body rigging screw undoing?

We've been berthed next to a boat with locknuts on their (open body) rigging screws instead of pins. We have them on the (closed body) lifeline turnbuckles, but for some reason this was the first time I've seen them on standing rigging. Perhaps not secure enough when facing vibrations?

Very effective as the nuts are left and right hand thread so if one tends to loosen the other tightens.

This one does concern le as the turn buckle ach still turn, not easy but is not a positive lock like split pins would be.

Yes that is correct and the head size is key, which must be big enough. Once the tails are bent into a neat splayed position, it is necessary to wrap waterproof tape around the turnbuckle to prevent the sharp pin tails catching anything. But make sure to leave the turnbuckle open, especially at the bottom, in order to prevent crevice corrosion.

When i re did the rigging i was told to not use tape, if done correctly no need to tape. Bend the ends over and into the fitting properly, rub your hand up and down the turnbuckle, if the ends of the pin dont shred your hand they wont shred the sail, it encourages you to do it properly in the first place.

Most riggers tape the middles, esp important for spis and the like, even more so with discontinuous rigs.

But as you say, if one can achieve a truly perfect finish, and its perfect even with the turnbuckles rotated to their end-stops, then I guess why not leave open.

What about all that waste of plastic with annuall cable ties? Surely stainless welding rods are better like here? View attachment 70922

I know every little helps but there are far more wasteful uses of cable ties and other things of a similar ilk (PVC and other tapes?) than the few required for this purpose.

Can't open body rigging screws use locknuts like my closed body ones do?
