32ft bilge keel motor sailor 7.5t displacement. What size auxiliary outboard in case trusty Perkins fails? It's got to be light enough to be manageable single handed but with enough grunt to push me home, albeit slowly. I'm thinking about a 15hp. Does that sound about right?

A 15hp outboard is quite heavy for one person to lift, but should be up to the job, also you would probably have to leave it attached to the boat which could present security problems.
Check whether you would need a long or short shaft.
As you also have sails perhaps you are being over cautious.

Fair winds and easy seas to you.

Having a similar setup (motorsailer with perkins), I would never consider a third power source. A biggish outboard on a fairly high transom sounds a nightmare.

I would suggest that if you need a get you home/up the river option, The dinghy lashed along side with even a very small o/b will push you along at a suprisingly good clip.

There were some post re this about 2 months or back.

Apart from being manageable you have to consider how you will mount your outboard. If you are thinking of a spring loaded bracket be aware that most will take a maximum of 8hp motors. I would have thought this would be plenty as a "get you home" providing you don't have to negotiate a fast flowing river or tidal stretch.

My 2.5 Mariner gives my 30ft Pioneer about 2-3 Knts on flat water. The prop will be important as you want one designed for a slow moveing boat and not a speed boat. I would have thought 7.5 -10 Hp engine designed as a yacht auxillury would be about right.

Hi Dick

Thought about the sails as your prime auxiliary ?
If it is too rough to sail your ship home, maybe another auxiliary is a bit tricky to get going...
