what should you have brought and what was not needed?

When first moving aboard to live for an extended period you have a good stab at what you may or may not need.

Somethings such as a sowing machine seemed superfluous initially but now we have had to buy one.

Shoes is something we brought too many pairs of (Swmbo is down to her last 30 pairs).

Offshore Wet weather gear has seen the light of day for the first month or so and then was packed away.

So, from your original itinerary was do you wish you had left behind and what should you have brought with you?

A sowing machine???? Christ! Where ever did you keep the tractor?

Yep, that's the ultimate in gear you didn't need on a boat!

And the thing you most wished you had taken? Advice that agricultural machinery wasn't much use on a boat?

I have found that it really gets you an inner with the tribe in third world countries such as France.

First Officer has seen a mini sewing machine... only 12" long by 8" high... Very light... As she has only bought one bag of clothes I am tempted to allow her to buy it to repair things... like my trousers the wreacked,,,,,

Over the last 15 years we have binned:

Eberspacher
240v fridge
Anything resembling a head torch
Pressure cooker
All vacum flasks
Gas water heater
A fisherman anchor

All useless in the long run.

We have bought a dehumidifier and an oil radiator for winter, 2 electric fans for summer.

Got but never used, windscoop.

Got but used maybe once a year, iron!

Had windscoop, used often.
If hot enough to heat solar-shower then hot shower is not needed = pointless.
Fisherman anchor essential on rocky boulder bottoms.
Pressure cooker a matter of preference but are very useful and work well even if you don't like them.
Dehumidifier? Iron? Oil radiator? If you have mains elec I suppose, thus useless for 90% of us.
Trebuchet. Now there's an idea for when you've been Guleted - as long as you have a plentiful supply of rotten sheep's heads handy.
Wind instruments. What are they for?
First Officer? Nah, deep six that one too!
Fire extinguishers, bilge alarm, bilge pumps, life raft, life jackets. Utter waste of time. Never used any of them once.

It depends on where you're going/at...

We were virtually welded to our wellies in the Western Isles, then in the Med they slowly decomposed in a locker.

Conversely, having left the Med we're now having to relearn what those triangular white cloth things fastened to the mast do; they were fairly redundant in the Med.

So your wife is the First officer? Is she new to sailing then' have you her on a training programme? The owners wife on the boat im on is higher in rank, an Admiral than the husband who is merely a Captain.

As for things to bring that were not..... Exercise weights, i had them in the USA and it really helps with keeping fit onboard for the next time the spinnaker ends up in the drink.

The item we brought and never use the TV, with Kindles and iPads, laptops it mever gets used.

On the wish list... Boom box in the engine room to mask the curses :)

Bought or acquired en route:

Folding bikes (summer use minimal, winter daily)
Sewing machine (note spelling.....) used to make new bimini, shade tent etc etc etc.
Pressure cooker - for making steamed puds during winter and bottling meat and veg for use in summer when shops not present.

Things that we found we didn't use:

Washing machine
