I am thinking of selling CI. Why? Its a long story really but whilst I can reasonably afford to run her, I am struggling to justify owning a vessel that the family are increasingly disinterested in. My recent trip to Anglesey highlighted for me that my enjoyment was somewhat singular. There are other reasons also. I was talking about boats, and the relative enjoyment one gets from them over time, with raven. We mulled (sic) this over with a glass of wine or two sat on his boat, St Elmo, one evening.

There are aspects of boating that I miss somewhat, like getting up early to catch the morning tide and go skiing; mucking about near Abersoch and beaching a boat to make a beach BBQ. And I guess here, I am in danger of trying to re-kindle old times, but I do really miss this stuff, and its these thoughts that are leading me to thinking of buying a good quality RIB with the money I could get by selling CI. Or find someone who would like to swap for a RIB maybe?

Don't get me wrong - I would hate to sell CI and find myself missing all the things I enjoy about owning such a boat and they are:
Owning a Windy (they really are good!)
Cruising ability
Being moored on a pontoon (I know it sounds daft)
Staying on board overnight
The occasional pontoon party and social aspects

I am beginning to ramble here - so what does the panel think?

Been having the same thoughts recently, already have a RIB which seems to get more use, although also thinking about getting a bigger boat with better/more comfortable accommodation so we can spend more time aboard with home comforts.

Up to now it's really just been for me and my dive buddies and whilst not really uncomfortable it is a bit spartan ie no shower and all a bit cramped, my partner enjoys being on a boat but doesn't like going ashore for showers as most of the time they're dirty and pretty crap. And I'm now doing less diving and we've still got the RIB so can use that if I want.

But the other problem is what about the demise of red diesel. Whilst we can afford easily to run the boat I will certainly begrudge paying a fiver or more per gallon and then using a gallon per mile with a bigger boat and engines.

So what now. Find a larger boat with a single engine (or maybe 2 small engines) Have always managed on one before, I see the many advantages of one engine as opposed to two. But there aren't many boats out there that only have one engine so choice is rather limited.

So the search goes on and in the meantime I'm enjoying using Blue Fisher. The more time I spend abord the more time i want to spend aboard. I love the boat, I know it like the back of my hand and she's never let me down in almost 10 years of ownership. Hopefully off to alderney in next few days.

One of the singular things about owning a boat is the difference between expectation and reality. In one's mind's eye one tends to be skimming over the waves with a happy family. In reality it's more about squeezing yourself and a bag of spanners into a space that all logic tells you is smaller than you are for 8 hours having mumbled something about "I'm just going to fetch something I left on the boat. I'll just be half an hour" and then making that phone call to a less than overjoyed spouse to say brightly, "I'm just leaving the marina now, dear".

Must say your message here filled me with dread. I have owned and used boats continuously for more than 40 years. It just seems a natural association, me and a boat. But I am terrified that if I subject this to any sort of logical or value-for-money type of analysis, I might just come up with the 'wrong' answer. So I'll pass if you don't mind /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Its not really a "value for money" type feeling that I am getting right now. Its harder to explain. I think its more a shift of emphasis thing.

Boats are just plane expensive but I could do without some of the ancillary costs associated with boats that don't necessarily put fuel in the tank.

Please guys........

......stop.....STOP!!!!

You really mustnt start thinking like this. You could easily initiate a panic dive in market prices for our boats as everyone decides to try and sell without anything like as many people deciding to buy.

Bad news all round......please dont do it.

I've been thinking of selling, for the last couple of years. Not sure why. Probably just sick of the expence and the 310 miles to Pymouth. Trouble is, Debs loves the boat and has not wanted me to sell it.

Mind our latest little excitment might well have put the tin hat on it.

Man, would You miss CI!
Watching You pound through the Lumpy Stuff on Your way in to Caernarfon Bar (see, can,t get away without Bar, coming into one of yours again!) I was very impressed.
I think She is Unique, what with LPG add on and Her condition for Her age.
She felt so solid.
I only helped Dave berth Her in Port Dinorwic Folks.
Even that 10 minute firtle convinced Me.
Where would You find another like Her?

I know where You are coming from.
I have enjoyed the use of the RIB latley as You know.
Whist My Scandinavian Tub has been in the Menders the RIB has been good fun.

I too would miss that Overnight facility etc etc.
Tiss a dilemma that's for sure.
Why not get a cheapish RIB , that maybe wants some work to bring it back to life?
That keep You out of mischief for a bit!
Then when it's fettled, use for a bit and see how You go.
If You think that is the Way Forward, so be it.
Flog the both and stick a few bob into Your Ideal Vessel.
Which as You well know doesn,t exist.
Good innit!
Has raven been spiking Your wine?
I reckon there could be some jealousy about Portmadoc.
Be on Your gaurd!
Anyway Folks if yer wants a spot on sorted Windy buy Daves.

The usual Brown Envelope will do Dave.

Yes, noted ! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have talked briefly to SWMBO and she sounded disappointed and unconvinced. Trouble is, in the ruff stuff, CI suddenly assumes a greater size than her 29 feet and then goes on to instill confidence and keep the crew dry!

A hard act to follow...

well.... I think as we get older, of course we change. My kids dont often come boating anymore, and I have fond memories of them doing so. Whether I'd have quite such fond memories with teenagers, I m not sure ! So, now we arent doing the same "family" thing as before, but then thats not just boating. We dont go to the zoo, or Mcdonalds much either!
Still, wifey is even more keen now than before-probably the marque!. In fact she got a bit nervous when I wondered how long to keep the boat, unless she gets a Khamsin, that is. Cant afford that, unfortunately. Well, cant sensibly afford it, which I guess is the same thing.
But I think we also all need our private time. Maybe for you a few hours on a boat, even a simpler boat, and simpler boating would in fact still be greatly rewarding...

Don't Panic Captain Mainwearing!

Clearly such a momentous decision needs careful reflection....you dont want to do anything hasty.

I propose we get together again aboard St Elmo (with a glass or two of red) and give careful consideration to the dilemma.

This and other more important things need to be discussed into the wee small hours with a large bottle of red and a small oil lamp me thinks.

Venue - St Elmo. Date & time TBA

I think a Third Person should attend.
Like a kind of Arbitrator, Counsellor/ Referi.

You know, a kind of more Sober ( kind of quiet, thinking type, not a bullsh%tter) type. Who has The Knowledge.
Of Scandinavian vessels, RIB's and the like.
Not someone Who will devour red wine like some.
More a person who would appreciate a good Malt.
A kinda wiser more stable mind would help the descision making.
Oh! by the way, I have a small oil lamp too!

Well let's see now..... we'll have to examine your credentials.

Dave reckons you know your boats - therefore you're well placed to give sound and impartial advice.

And you do have intimate knowledge of the craft about which the deliberation is taking place (namely CI) because we saw photographic evidence of you helming said craft. Therfore you are able to appreciate the handling, speed blah di blah di...

And you are geographically well placed.........

And you did did say "a good malt".......

Okay - you're in! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Time and Dates are needed.
Plus a Fee has to be discussed.
PM would be more succint in that Area.
"blah di blah di..."
Is that a Balti type of dish, that accompanies this Red Wine consumption Scenario?
East meets West. That kind of thing?

I think, as a Gourmet ,I might like to experiment in this Area.
This could be an International Regular Arrangement.
An IRA!
Or maybe a Boaty Eisteddfod
With Sea Shanties, (Canu Mor?)
Anyway I have a good friend called Malt , He is a decent sort, bit of a smoothie,
has a good tongue though, warm hearted too.
Would have made a good Snow skier.
Cos He slippeds down easy!!!
I digress this is a Serious problem that Dave Snelson faces.
It is only Good Eggs like us and Forum members that will have to help Him out.
I might even waive the Fee in this instance.
Tiss a bit critical! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
