What muppet agreed to this advertising layout then?

I've tinkered with the pop-up settings and the ads seem to have disappeared (Chrome browser on a Nexus 7 / Android) but when I access the forum I get the narrow display as if an ad is about to appear which quickly switches to the full screen view. No sign of any ads but a bit annoying. Any ideas why?

Just checked on the work PC and that does the same

That's what I get as well, annoying but livable.

My tablet blocks them.. A bit like me when I get the PBO and the first thing I do is rip out those stupid card like advertising pages that stop you flicking through the mag as one does. I make a point of not reading them, either.

.
I'm on plain old IE9 and it appears that IE's popup blocker is enogh to stop them.

I get a momentary flash at the rhs on a new page then the forum is full width again with nary an ad in sight.

They're going to have to scale back the size of the ad a bit but I won't complain of it being there. It's a business providing a free service and they are right to do what they can to offset the loss they'd otherwise be making.

That said, it would seem Chrome has an ad blocker that I'd never really noticed before.

I very much doubt that Chrome has a built-in ad-blocker enabled by default. Remember, if nothing else, Google itself is primarily an advertising company.

More likely the addition of ads has been done in a half-arsed fashion that doesn't work on Chrome :D

The ad blocker is an extension, or what ever they call it, that can easily be added to Chrome.

I'm well aware of what an ad blocker is, thanks.

However, Woodlouse's post to which I was responding strongly implied that he had never installed such an extension, and assumed that because he nevertheless was not seeing the ads, there must be a blocker built into Chrome by default. I was suggesting the reason was more likely to lie elsewhere.

Merely pointing out that the chrome ad blocker is in fact an extension that can be used in various ways and that itdoeswork and that the adsappear when it is not running not that anything is failing because it is "half arsed" as you call it

It can be set to run all the time, turned on and off as require allow ads on selected sites etc etc.

It was certainly blocking the ads on these forums while they were active. When "paused" the ads appeared as I imagine intended..

Nothing seems to be failing because it is "half-arsed" as you call it.

I do not know but... They have scored a home goal and not helped the addman at all. I have now learned about add blockers and there maybe one or 2 other forums I will visit. IN the past I have not bothered cause the adds drove me nuts....

I am sure I will not be the only one...

Tesco actually provide waste paper bins by the magazine racks specifically for the purpose of getting rid of the accursed things.

I guess they only need one on a thousand to read the thing. Someone probably did a calculation. The same thing online. There are actually people out there that thing it is possible to increase the size of your gentlemans bits by taking a pill.

Of course you have to test cross browser.. But I honestly never met a developer using IE as a daily browser through choice before.
Although I'm not primarily a developer, I do a fair bit - most of it for internal business use - and we generally use IE as the browser - therefore anytime I develop for the intranet I use IE. Otherwise, generally I'm on Firefox ...
At home it's a mixture of Safari, Atomic and Firefox - but then I don't use windows machines at home so IE isn't available (or needed)

I was wondering why my computer started displaying the forum across 2/3 of the screen, then paused and spread it right across.

Then I stumbled across this thread and found all about ad-blockers. didn't know i had one.

Doesn't seem to block ads on all sites - where do I find my settings?

I don't think that you do. I say this because I know that I do not have an ad blocker, and yet I see the same behaviour. Other people seem to be in the same boat.

My hypothesis (and there could be other explanations) is that the insertion of the ads has not been done correctly by the forum developers, so that they don't display in all browsers even though they're supposed to.

For some reason I truly cannot fathom, Vic appears to take issue with the above hypothesis.

Natalie says ads delayed at present, so no ablocker is working yet.
