As probably the newest yacht/sailing club in the world the Porto Montenegro YC has got off to a tricky start as to where to place itself.
Chatting with one of the team there challenged to make it a success, he asked. What would you do?
The Porto Montenegro Marina is an exclusive marina. Rothschild and Munks fantasy land for a new country in the beautiful Bay of Kotor.
The club house itself is going to be moved at some stage but for now it has a large kitchen with a fridge full of beer at prices that would make your yacht club sound expensive. (1 Euro for a Beer, Coke, Juice) with a secondary wine fridge for champagne and other varieties.
There is a snug area with a projector screen and there is a dinning area and lounge with a large wide screen connected to a Sky TV in the UK so it has every channel available. I sat with some other captains to watch the Formula one Grand prix last weekend.
The club also has a Boat club operation where there are brand new carbon fibre Sculls and pairs for rowing. With this their are Kayaks and some other water toys.
They are looking at buying a fleet of Race boats (26ft) to attract world class sailors to race in the area. They also have optimists on the list as well.
In the same complex as the yacht club there is a two lane bowling alley and a fitness centre with 4 flood lit tennis courts 100 ft away.
You may also have read that Rothschild himself had a big party in the infinity pool area (telegraph) this pool is the only thing over charged facility in the area but they want to make it over charged to make it exclusive I imagine but the yacht club is not supposed to be exclusive.
They are also looking to get RYA certified and I suggested having an RYA training boat for Day Skipper and competent crew courses. With a sailing area that is wonderful and the possibility of sailing to Croatia and Italy would make it a fab place to learn to sail.
Anyway there is some background to the project. Now I throw it open.
WHAT MAKES A GREAT YACHT CLUB?
Cheers James
