What do you think makes a good crew,

practice
training
experience
Manners
mind reading
cooking .
if you could name 5 things what would they be,

Also are vessels run better with a single sex crew or a mixed sex crew?,

Having not sailed any distance but hear of hot beding how does it work,
Power boats tend to run out of fuels so it is nice and conveient to stop in a marina for a night.

As would like to learn to sail in a few years time, I would like to do some homework. so if anyone can say the up and downs of sailing , it would be a great help,

Good crew/and or skipper is a personality thing. Some are thrown by the slightest problem. Others take everything that is thrown at them with equanimity.

Experience helps, without a doubt, but there are some you could take as problem free crew who have never been to sea before.

My No 1 to 5 is someone I can trust my life to in an emergency, and would be level headed. That's why I single hand so much, there are very few I'd trust. Though met a few on these forums, and can name them if you force me.

I find that there are jobs I will trust one crew member with but not another, And very few I trust not be thrown by a problem.
I do think that it is a gift that peaple have that allowes others to trust them. Its late and I am not explaining this well.

PS would never force ever,

Good sense of humour is a very good attribute, also experience and congenial character. "Hot" bedding is just that, when one gets out of the bed/bunk, another gets in, bed is still hot, traditionally in the same sheets, but nowadays, you keep your own sheets/sleeping bag. "Very hot" bedding in when two (consenting) of you get in the same bunk!!

Re: MY GIRLFRIEND.....

My girlfriend is just the best crew you could wish for!!! She has no fear of silly narrow sportboat sidedecks and no decent handholds- and no fear of falling in. She makes the perfect intelligent fender by placing either herself or a real fender at the point at which Im about to crunch! (She even puts the boat before her own wellbeing and safety!)

She puts up with my bad moods, and still makes me lunch and tea. She seems to have taken to boating wonderfully- we've been boating almost every weekend this year so far and she still comes back for more. Ive managed to avoid any decorating or domestic tasks for months!

Best of all shes 5'5 Blonde, athletic and gorgeous (thats my opinion of course!) What more could a guy wish for? (and you can keep your dirty remarks to yourselves)

Jealous????!!!!!

Surely this dream must come to an end soon!

Good crew do not step on board empty handed, and don't get off at the end of a cruise or race without first ensuring everything is put away and the boat is totally cleaned and ready for the next trip.

Good crew act as if they are part owners, and, look after the equipment, Good crew have a fine sense of humour and laugh with the rest of us, not at the rest of us.

Good crew turn up to assist in any way they can when it comes doing maintenance, antifouling, lifting out, polishing and all the other on-going tasks.

Good crew can navigate, trim sails, discuss tactics, steer downwind under adverse conditions with confidence, assist anyone doing anything without being asked.

Good crew becomes a better crew when not all are of the same sex.

And most important, the skipper Must be all of the above but of a single sex.....
