What items from another 'activity' have you found use for on boat ?

3mm aluminium knitting needle: is now holding up the port hand "wing" on Tigger's Windex. It actually seems like a direct replacement of the original

They also make an inexpensive shear pin for the tender's outboard; just cut them to the correct length - 7/8" in my case.

Oh I forgot the most useful thing!

Loads of those plastic cartons that Chinese takeaways come in. We must have about 30 of them in the stern locker, each one's contents written on the lid in permanent marker. E.g. Stainless screws, stainless nuts, Brass screws, Jubilee clips, curtain fixings, washers, Self tapping screws, adhesives, etc etc.

I cut the bottom off a drinks bottle to cover the chain pipe after losing the original cast top over the side & discovering I couldn't get a replacement.

A garden cane as a burgee staff to get my burgee above the stuff at the masthead - a requirement for wearing a defaced blue :D

Roll flat garden hose at a fraction of the price of chandler's items. Not as durable, but can be replaced many times before it gets dearer than marine equivalent.

Battery bath water alarm as bilge alarm.

S/S barrel garden barbie that sits on aft cabin hatch - cost £15 from local supermarket - eat your heart out Cobb owners.

Solar powered Garden led light as anchor light - went missing recently off pushpit mount - I am consequently £1.99 poorer

Condemned climbing ropes for shore lines, MoB recovery, painters, fender ropes, towing & even kedge warp. Also used as safety lines when letting kids play in the tender & practice theri rowing.

Replaced the split diapragm in my loo pump (a Lavac) with one cut out of a tractor tyre - why pay £35+ for a flat bit of rubber with a few holes in it?

Calf buckets from a farm store are low profile & strong, ideal for caravan & boat use - easy to store, strong and reasonably priced.

Self adhesive non slip edge tape sold for swimming pools lasts longer and and around 25% the price or non slip tape that is badged for for marine use.

Found same with epoxy bog supplied like a small stick of rock. You know the 'knead it together to get it to react' stuff?
Marine version £7.
Plumbers version £2.40.

Nylon kitchen cutting board is invaluable wherever one finds wear. Under gangway to stop it squeeking / wearing out. Base of dinghy as sacrificial keel. Even trims up nicely to infill sink area and add galley work top.

Another use for the clear plastic Chinese takeaway boxes - in the chart table, without their lids, keep all my nick-nacks sorted and tidy (SWMBO's idea).

I've found these useful on occasion.....

Nappies are good for getting oil out of the bilge and never tried but tampons work well for sealing a broken seacock.

Mobile holder from Halfords £14.99 -

Has strong suction cup base, bendy stalk, and spring clamp to hold phone or in my case an Icom H/Held VHF in cockpit. Lasted 5 years before suction cup release got a bit stiff.

But my best buy also from Halfords -

Red LED lights from the boy racer dept. £5 each for flush fitting 12v night lighting provides just the right amount of night lighting but many variations available including long LED strips by Hella but half Chandlery price and even red neon!!!! Pimp your boat!!

You've reminded me of a couple I forgot:

A nappy, cut in two lengthways & the two halves sewn together (end to end) make a superb scarf to stop the drips going down your neck - no matter how hard it rains or how much spray you get. SWMBO's have a dolphin or heart badge sewn on & mine have an anchor badge.

Plus a 1960's car map light on a flexy stalk with the white lens swopped for an amber indicator repeator makes an excellent night light. Bright enough to read a chart, or make a brew, get changed etc, yet almost no impact on your night vision.

B & Q white plastic flowerpots...

Cut about to make removable porthole cowls so they can be left open for ventilation on the mooring without too much rain getting in.
