I now have a Trapper 500 and don't agree that the accommodation is cramped. Working on the engine is however difficult as mine's a beta 14 crammed into the available space.

I learnt on a Halcyon 23 and the great thing about that was it sailed well - except in really light airs - was okay for weekends away, and very little could go wrong. The boat wasn't too powerful and behaved itself well.

At less than £4k for one with a good inboard engine they have to be on the first boat list.

Catalina 22's are pevalant and relatively cheap. Most sailing schools use them as they are responsive at the helm and are generally safe. I started with an NA23 made in Germany and very much like the catalina. Made and continue to make mistakes on mine:)

I had a Hunter 701, basic but friendly and we even lived aboard it for 5-6 months, my favourite and most friendly little boat was a Trapper 500 and this little diamond I would recommend for anyone who has never sailed.

What would you recommend?
Depends who to.
Who is going to use it. Single handed bloke, married couple, family? Trailer sailer, dry moored, on the water? Cruising, racing, day sailing?

Not enough information.

1st boat. Something cheap. You will soon decide it's not what you need.
