The description 'Pontoon boat' has been used in a couple threads recently.

Can someone kindly elaborate what this means - could be literally any boat surely ?

Usually a flat platform sitting on 2 pontoon bananas, this type of boat is not designed for open or rough water navigation but as a peacefull platform for relaxing or entertaining visitors on the water where maximum outside space and view is prime.

They rent them out in Cala dor and andraxt in mallorca. People head round the coast in them.

They look like sheds but they seem stable enough to navigate the coast ( to my surprise) and give people a large and comfortable place to spend a few hours. They seem to take about a dozen people

They are often for sale on the mallorca face book groups.

I believe that Henryf of this parish has a penchant for these, and iirc 'Bennington' is his preferred brand...

Ah yes, the great American pontoon boat ?

Sleek, sporty, great handling and a thin pop up tent to spare your modesty for when you need a poo ?

Every time I get dragged round an American shopping mall I seem to end up in a Bass Pro shop where they have a large selection. The redneck in me feels an urge, thankfully all the other voices in my head say stick with Princess ?

Who wouldn't want to be sitting enjoying their champagne as uncle Bubba pinches a loaf just inches away behind a thin canvas veil...

Pinches a loaf :):):) Funiest line I’ve ever seen. Honestly, still laughing at that one now.

They have 2 or 3 to rent in Portals also. These are smaller than that though, wouldn’t like to see more than 4 adults on one. They look sketchy in the extreme in anything other than millpond seas.

Trevor, there is a pontoon boat on the Hamble that takes disabled people out for a trip. You might have seen this from Boadicea? Not sure where they board, but assume Eastlands?

as this is a boaty forum I believe the correct nautical/naval term is "crimping off a length"

How much would it cost to sample the delights of one of these vessels in say Majorca then if you happened to be near Cal dor? I assume there is a known pontoon boat hire co ? They look just the thing for a drift around the bays so knowing zero about mobo just wondered if any reputable operators ?

I have rented a few of these when i lived in Florida for trips on the lakes and rivers by Sanford, good fun for a bunch of mates on a day out with a cooler full of beer. I wouldn't like to take one out to sea though, they are definitely a lake/river boat.

They are rented in the marina. For some reason about euro 100 for 60/90 mins springs to mind. That is not accurate but I don’t think is a million miles out either.

They never tell people how to anchor so they lower it until it touches the bottom and then drift. I do normally make a suggestion. Some people are not too appreciative !

Also seems to be the done thing to leave the underneath of the plywood (or even OSB, the stuff they board up broken windows with) deck completely exposed to ensure that it starts rotting after a couple of years.

Yes I have seen the thing, just didn't dawn on me these 'boats' had their own classification. I had more assumed powered raft thing !

Now I know Henry and I share more than just a casual interest in these special boats, but times are moving forward with some real revolutiory designs.. for example Henry, did you know you can now get a flybridge pontoon boat?

hell yeah!
