Ahhhh, my googling didn't reveal the detail in there, just the fact he left his family, pissed off abroad and started new families.
Didn't Moitessier write to his wife to ask her her to knit clothing for his new kids with his new woman? He certainly counts as feckless, I doubt the OP was suggesting anything to do with the things you're referring to.
Terrific writer though, or his translators were, at least.

Surprised no ones gone all poetic. I might have a go in a bit with phrases like ...'gently beating into a low sunset with the empty anchorage up ahead and G&T's at the ready'. If I was to say all that, then that would be it.

I'm going to break the mould here and point out that it needn't be all financial doom and gloom. After moving aboard full time, I rented out my house, and that eventually brought in more than the boat cost. Anybody else here with a cash positive boat??
(the 'downside' was that because I was not planning on living aboard full time in the cold and damp UK, I had to quit my job and sail south. A tough decision but we all have our cross to bear)

Guaguin 'wives' were not wives but more like contract term teenage concubines, delightful no doubt and his pictures are a great gift to the world, but he was earlier thrown out by his wife in europe due to unwillingness to support his family.
Moitessier by comparison merely abandoned a wife and took up with dusky maidens. Both were great in their own way but neither represent good role models or founts of wisdom beyond their specialist skills
