Thanks, everyone. I'll give them a good clean and see how they stay up.
Is there a safe anti-rust treatment for the new cylinders?
Condoms are natural rubber, which I would expect to be attacked by atmospheric oxygen to form a sticky mess, though I havn't tested this. Nitrile glove finger sounds a much better bet.Put a condom over the cylinder! Yes, really.
Looking at the old cylinders. Gas under pressure. Is there an approved way to get rid of them?
If not, I think I'll put 'em back in the LJs and set 'em off, then take 'em to the local dump.
That is what I intend to use as it is a proper anti corrosion product and will protect the whole cylinder.Mine are fine untreated. I recently recycled our old ones after 20 years and they still had the original cylinders, but these will be spending the season on a 1970s boat that gets regular, but infrequent use (not practical for the owner to take them home each time).
I tried the nitrile finger trick, but the fingers are small, and won't protect the threads, so I think I'm going to get some of this

and give them a couple of coats.
I'm not worried about weight. If the full weight is, say, 140g, if there's the slightest leak, it'll take seconds for the weight to be 110g. As long as they're above the stamped minimum weight, and not corroded, they're fine.
That's a solution I like - they're yours. That is what I intend to use as it is a proper anti corrosion product and will protect the whole cylinder.
Any old co2 cylinders can be reused for bike inner tube nflation .if you want to post them to me I can distribute them to mountain bikers.

N Wales is a bit of a long wander from Southampton and, given the state of some of the cylinders, I'm not 100% happy about posting them so, unless someone in S Hants wants them, I fear they're destined for the dump.

If still usable in a non-emergency situation like a training course, they can demonstrate inflating a lifejacket without going to the expense of using a new one, especially if the course is being run by a not-for-profit club etc. Why? Course providers do training not waste disposal.
