Rusty Life Jackets

Mine are fine untreated. I recently recycled our old ones after 20 years and they still had the original cylinders, but these will be spending the season on a 1970s boat that gets regular, but infrequent use (not practical for the owner to take them home each time).

I tried the nitrile finger trick, but the fingers are small, and won't protect the threads, so I think I'm going to get some of this

and give them a couple of coats.

I'm not worried about weight. If the full weight is, say, 140g, if there's the slightest leak, it'll take seconds for the weight to be 110g. As long as they're above the stamped minimum weight, and not corroded, they're fine.

Couple of online sources dedicated to marine safety with really good prices for rearming L/Js etc especially compared to buying from any chandlery.
Recently checked over 8 L/Js and made some decent savings buying direct.

I wrap my cylinders in insulating tape (spirally) up to the thread. Then write the weights and dates on the tape. No rust. You only have to take a few waves or spray and they get wet with seawater, so the very thin zinc electroplating doesn't last long.

Thanks, everyone. I'll give them a good clean and see how they stay up.

Is there a safe anti-rust treatment for the new cylinders?

You can buy webbed plastic sleeves ,however I have had success using heat shrink sleeving and just shrink the excess length ends.

This seems to work fine .by keeping the cylinders from damp bladder material. The life jackets are well used with little corrosion..

Put a condom over the cylinder! Yes, really.
Condoms are natural rubber, which I would expect to be attacked by atmospheric oxygen to form a sticky mess, though I havn't tested this. Nitrile glove finger sounds a much better bet.

Rust treatment I would try my standard rub with aluminium foil and a very little vegetable oil, probably linseed for choice.

I would avoid contact between the oil and any rubber components

Looking at the old cylinders. Gas under pressure. Is there an approved way to get rid of them?

If not, I think I'll put 'em back in the LJs and set 'em off, then take 'em to the local dump.

Yes, I'd fire them in the LJ as they're meant to be fired. Don't improvise!

When I'm absolutely sure something is empty I usually drill or punch a hole in it, to avoid arguments at the tip.

That is what I intend to use as it is a proper anti corrosion product and will protect the whole cylinder.

Any old co2 cylinders can be reused for bike inner tube nflation .if you want to post them to me I can distribute them to mountain bikers.

That's a solution I like - they're yours.

I clicked on the link in your location, and it's the same postcode as me. If you PM me your address, I'll wander round with them.

+1 for ACF-50 from motorbike/scooter shops; it's also good for engines and other metalwork. Cheaper and probably not quite as good for gas cylinders is aerosol furniture polish and don't wipe it off.

I clicked on @Mister E 's location and it gives a postcode near me ! He certainly moves around quickly !
I haven't moved house for 6 years plus I have not entered a location.
I will have to look into it thanks.

Just looked and the location was "here" so have changed it.
I have no idea when or why that got entered. I suppose then I would be near everyone .

Are you in North Wales ? My postcode starts with LL.
Boat is in Pwhelli Marina.

Darn it! I thought it seemed too easy!

N Wales is a bit of a long wander from Southampton and, given the state of some of the cylinders, I'm not 100% happy about posting them so, unless someone in S Hants wants them, I fear they're destined for the dump.

Donate them to a local sea survival course provider?
