I’m having an inclination towards an Ohlson 38, need as
much info as possible. Can anyone help. The couple I have
looked at are long fin and skeg, sloop rig.

Here’s hoping!

"inclination" "rolling, rolling, rolling"

Maybe the boats right for you!

Seriously, why go for such an old boat? Things have moved on since then. Designs are now much better.

A couple of years ago two Dutch ladies did a large Atlantic circuit in an oldish but well maintained Ohlson 38.(Caribbean, Canaries, Cape Verdes, then, quite unusually, West Africa, then Brasil, on to Surinam and the Caribbean, than back home to the Netherlands via the Azores) They seemed to be very happy with the boat, their trip was published in one of the Dutch sailing magazines. Otherwise, take a look here. Maybe this site will give you ideas about updating the boat (if you buy her, that is....).

Good experience

I sailed on an Ohlson 38 for some years - one with a famous pedigree called Robertson's Golly. The same boat that Clare Francis competed successfully and famously in the 70s in the Ostar.

That particualr boat was as tough as old boots, but she had some constructional problems which meant she leaked some when water was crossing the deck. Read Clare's book about her for more detail on that.

In general terms she is a toughie, and a good boat. We sailed the Western Approaches out to Ireland and so on in some very silly weather, and the boat was never the problem - just the crew stamina!!

A boat to look after you, if you can sail in the conditions she is good at! Some were home finished, some were professionally finished - make sure you know which you are buying, as I expect some of the kit boats were not as good as the professionally finished ones.

Have fun.

hmmmm....I thought it was dogies, as pronounced doh-gees, old western term for cattle, tho I suppose you could use the cattle to round up the doggies if you wanted.
