What dinghy sailing clothing to wear

What a fantastic response thanks all.
I only intend to be a fair weather sailor (for now), especially as i'm building up my sons confidence. I don't want to fork out a fortune either.

So think i'll get two sets of long johns 2-3mm and some kind of windproof top, it looks like the tops are going to be the expensive bit.

If we really take to it then we'll get some more serious kit later.

any tips on tops?

A proper spray top which has an effective soft seal at the neck is nice to have.
Mine is a Helly Hansen eBay bargain.
Rooster do some fleece lined ones which are a bit dear.
Breathable is nice but bumps the cost a little.
These things are sold for canoeing as well.

Anyone noticed that the OP doesn't want to get serious or expensive yet??

In the meanwhile the pissing contest goes on.

I don't think he's up for Searush's 'Compo' approach or your 'nether decolletage' either!

Y'see that's the problem, all "image concious" & no chance to just relax & enjoy. You just don't get it do you? :D

Are you all still teenagers or something? Cos they seem to think that a brand name makes them cool without realising that "cool" is about attitude not how much you spend.

BTW it's my butt you are admiring, not Phil's. That wetsuit jacket was bought 30 years ago for winter canoeing & the shorts were chosen for the fact that I didn't care if they got muddy or ripped. You can't see them, but I was wearing Aldi water shoes (from about 5 years ago) which I use whenever I am in water, but not on sand. For sandy beaches I prefer bare feet.

Total outfit cost? Probably under 30 squid, but I wasn't cold & was happy to wade into the lake to launch & rig the boat. We were on the lake about an hour & neither of us fell in, but Phil got his legs wet when the boat filled up! :D

Expensive gear doesn't make you a better sailor or even a better person - it MAY make you warmer, but that ain't guaranteed either!

Oooh no, it's not my arse.

I am sartorial decorum personified in a boat

To be honest, we need more of this! It's bad enough that technology has made modern competitive dinghies bleedin' expensive, we don't need the casual dinghy sailor convinced they need expensive clothing too.

My only concession is a buoyancy aid. I think they're worth wearing.

Wimp!

I have a selection of buoyancy aids one of which I will be wearing when sailing on my own.

Well I did get knocked off a Squib a week or two back, so i'm treading gently. :D

Anyway, that's my concession to the nanny world. I don't expect you 'fish swimmers' to :)

He had a safety boat following with the press corps on board so BA was not required. But he was going so fast we couldn't keep up due to the Lake's speed limit & the drivers' incompetance.

The photographer HAS since been sacked (but at least he didn't drop he camera!) :D

That's what I thought. I guessed there was so little wake due to that top secret 'special' planing hull that he's running :D

The photographer made a tactical equipment error whilst the wind was actually blowing. By the time the re-programming of the image capturing equipment was completed the wind had dropped to the state you see in the picture.
On Windermere another 10 minutes would have delivered a decent breeze but the water ingress brought an early halt to the session.

Of course!! (eyebrows raise) Just don't go testing your statement in a court of law.. :D

Can't you see the rooster tail off the rudder? It's a dead giveaway, the bone in her teeth is hidden by the bow. Phil has an elegant & relaxed style of sailing, perfectly complemented by his relaxed rural "smart casual" attire.

Whereas I prefer the full-on macho builder's cleavage approach, pretending to be lighter than Phil, (despite being at least 2 stone heavier) and hanging ostentatiously off the gunwhale.

D'ya think we should let the OP have his thread back? :D

Ah ha. All effect and no science.

Read the words of those who know..
-Light – 0 to 5 knots – sitting inboard
-Normal – 6 – 10 knots – sitting on the sides
-Hiking – 11 to 16 knots – hiking out
-Over Powered – 17 knots +

Normal. seems about right to me. :D

Just been reading about the various rigging adjustments for different conditions. Good grief. Some people have nothing better to do.

I take it that's off the Solo web site? It's about right for the winds that we had around 12 knts-ish when I set out & closer to 8-10 later when you came back.

And Fire99; of course I'm mad, why else would anyone be on here? Any way I still haven't had teh GP14 out for a play rig & tomorrow I have to get 4 new tyres for the old mondeo. Should triple its value! :D

I fear it may be you that is not getting it. There has been very little "brand" talk. Indeed a couple of days on, I still can't remember the name of the brand of wet suit that I was waxing lyrical about. And I'm certainly not advocating "cool": warm is so much better. :D
