What Charts?

I have just purchased a Westerley Centaur, presently based on the Solent. It is my intention to sail it up in June to the Solway. I don't know exactly which charts, if any, will be aboard the vessel, but most of its sailing has been in the channel.

Trying to make sense of the Admiralty or Imray catalogues is proving difficult. Can anyone advise me as to a basic portfolio of charts and pilot books that will suffice for a passage from Woolston to Kippford and whether there are cheaper sources where these can be purchased.

Any advice gratefully received.

There is a charts page and another pilot book page on my round UK website here. This covers the whole of the UK, but with an Admiralty Home Waters Catalogue (free from any Admiralty chart agent) you can pick out the relevent ones for your trip.

With the list of charts and pilots on the above pages we always had sufficient information for everywhere we went.

Buying charts and pilots new for a long costal trip like you are proposing is a considerable cost. If this is a delivery trip, it may make it uneconomic compared to road or professional delivery.

I eventually got in touch with Imray and the guy there gave me advice on a necessary portfolio of charts the Lundy/Irish Sea Pilot and the Shell Channel Pilot. I did not mind buying them as we will need them in future when we are cruising and they give us a starter for 10. He gave a 10% discount and it did not come to too much. Once they arrrive I will be able to look at them and decide if I need to supplement them or if they will suffice for the voyage. The trip itself is part of the fun of now owning our own sea boat so I did not consider transporting her up.

Thanks again - I looked at your website and will peruse it more carefully at my leisure.

Are you keeping your boat in Kippford? I use to sail from Maryport, so visited often. A really attractive part of the country, and I intend visiting again sometime soon depite now being parked in Pwllheli.
