What camera to film sailing with?

I would like to record some trips just for my use, I don,t want to set up a Youtube channel so would just like a simple budget camera (if that it is what it is called, I am not interested in tech, video cameras are more my time and didn't buy one of those either).

Can I view the footage on my IPad or maybe just use the IPad to actually film the footage but do you have to use a useless host like photobucket to store any footage. Thanks.

A good mobile phone with image stabiliser will shoot amazing footage at 4k.
You can upload it to youtube and give a link to friends ?

I'd be tempted to look at a Gopro or cheaper action cam equivalent. Pocketable, waterproof, drop proof, one button operation and you can connect wirelessly to your ipad to transfer footage.

I use a Kodak PlaySport ZX5, a very neat little thing which will do 1080p, or 720p at either 30 or 60fps. Out of production for a while, but readily available on eBay at around £30.

I bought a SJ8 Pro in the sales this time last year - very good. Can do 4k, but I don't have a 4k screen at home and my laptop doesn't have the (significant) ooomph required to process and edit 4k video. I settle for 1080 @60fps so can do slo-mo from my captures - waves / splashes etc.

What I find makes for better viewing is a steady camera shot - I bought a handheld gimbal for ~ £100 which was really good and totally removed shaky cam footage.

Of course not long after I bought mine the Osmo Pocket came out - If I were buying afresh, I'd be considering that closely.

I quite enjoy putting together wee 3-5 min videos of our trips and holidays. the footage coupled with whatever song is most commonly played during that holiday is very good at taking you back. No-one else would have the slightest interest in the output tho!

Depends what you want to achieve.
I find wide angle shots from GoPro etc get quite dull very quickly.

The only camera I ever use now is my phone (and occasionally my drone, I suppose). The phone (an iPhone 8, though a decent Samsung etc would be as good or better) is a better still and video camera than any of the old dedicated cameras I have. I use a LifeProof case for taking it paddleboarding.

I suppose if you want special kit then one of the gimballed vlogging cameras might be handy on a boat - I've never used one, but based on experience with the drone I'd happily give DJI's offering a try.

GoPro which has image stabilisation, water proof and gives a good wide angle. The only disadvantage is there are times a true zoom would be useful.

That is pretty good tbf! After playing with my SJ8 and a new found appreciation of how much effort the video editing is, I can only imagine how tricky the insta360 must be

I would use a mobile phone till you figure out if you want any specialist kit, some of the results are excellent.
Using a simple video editor will improve the viewabiity of the film, even if you are just cutting it down and adding titles.

I would download to YouTube. It's free and it means you can watch stuff on your TV or any mobile device. If you don't want teenage nerds making stupid comments just mark the video as private and it will not show - yet you can still post links to friends so they can see them.

I don’t often take video but if I do I use my camera. I can then edit it in Windows free editor and convert it into the YouTube preferred format which loads much more quickly. From the number of people who use phones I imagine that this step is not needed for phones. An iPad would do it but it would be a clumsy and awkward object to manipulate.

If I were shooting in the UK and or EU, I'd look for a camera that can shoot 25 or 50. Then I don't have to fix mains lighting flicker in post.

I do a few vids, boaty and motorbikey, very amateur, link is in my signature. I've used my phone or an inexpensive action cam, both of which can be used manually, with a selfie stick or using a handlebar mount to fix to pulpit or pushpit...

If you're after buttery smooth 4k video then this is not for you, but 1080p YouTube or FB content is no problem.

It allows you to frame the video after you have taken it - so for example, if you've got a pod of dolphins playing in your bow wave, then poke the "invisible" selfie stick over the bows and it will capture everything in a 360° sphere around the camera. Once the dolphins have got bored and swum off, download the footage to your phone/ipad/tablet and use the editing SW to re-frame the video from the 360° footage - means you can choose the camera angle so the dolphins are always in shot, without you ever having to move or point the camera at them.

Aldi are doing a Balco 4k waterproof action cam for £49.99. Just got one and for the price seems good. Has a screen and various mounts. Comes in a nice case too. Got it so I can play around and not worry too much of it getting damaged or lost overboard. I can use it underwater to check out my prop etc.
