A friend of mine (ahem) is considering a return to boat ownership after a couple of years "on the beach". The ideal vessel will have the following characteristics:-

1) LOA approx 25 foot
2) 3-4 berths
3) Single diesel
4) Less than 3 years old
5) Approx £50k
6) Heads (with shower)
7) Galley (inc microwave)
8) Sunbathing space
9) Safe foredeck
10) Diesel heating
11) Standing room in the cabin.

BMB 270 was an initial thought but some say these boats are not that great. Someone else suggested a Jeanneau Leader 805. Is there standing room inside the cabin?

Any more ideas?

Hi Pete I see the BMB's are getting good write up, but so too are the various Jeanneau models. Aquadors get good reports also, I quite fancy the Aquadors.

If you can increase your budget slightly, when I was down at SIBS last year, Four Winns were offering a 248 Vista, single diesel with high spec for a little over £50k NEW! Aquador you really need 25ft or 26ft and don't tend to come on the s/hand market that often - when they do, command a premium. BMB 27 - have heard good things. This one is still for sale here Has been dropped in price by about £10k.

My mate that had the Leader 805 bort a Four Winns 248 - he was not impressed, so much so that it is now on the market - so why did he sell the 805 ?? We've spent many a day discussing that one /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

The Aquadors looked great in the mags but at LBS we spent quite a while on the smaller ones - they felt really cramped and that stupid footwell in the cabin roof that impinges into the cabin area is a big negative point. IMHO.

I always think that a sports boat with minimal accomodation doesnt make a lot of sense in our climate as sheltering under a leaky, cold and draughty canopy when the weather's bad is not a load of fun. So I would be thinking about something with a hardtop that you can open up a bit if the weather's fine and batten down when it's not. Aquador has already been mentioned but there's also boats like Nimbus, Marex, Saga or maybe a Botnia Targa. Not as flash as a Fairline Targa but maybe more sensible

Re: i agree

since you can't lounge under the sun very much in the uk, something a bit built-up wd make more sense.

I also think that powerboating is a heap more fun with the wind in your face, so somehting botniarish (?) that allows you to wander about the boat at sea or hiode indoors is great - sitting at the bow is the best bit of boating for me, cheaper too as instead of clattering along at near 30 knots you need to be nearer 20knots max else all the towels/hats fly off.

In praise of Botnia\'s

ooh no.

Botnia targa have big-boat qualities. You can steer them from two places like a bigger flybridge and you can walk round the deckat sea and you can lounge at the front at sea, and it's nice and dark in the mornings in summer on a botnia like a italian boat with none of the stupid skylights over the beds as on most uk powerboats apparently specially designed to wake you up at 5am (brit manufactuers shd give an option for a blanked window for med use cos the silly blinds still let light thru) and just like any larger boat there are lots of shed-like opportunities for twiddling with things. Finally, of course, Botnias go very fast and cost a ton of money. So, i am all in favour.
