What are you paying for fuel

Just a thought and no intention of doing it but if you rock up at a fuel berth and say "charter boat mate, give me the cheap stuff" do you have to prove that your a commercial user?

Not to the operator - it is your declaration, he will simply record your details, boat name (notably), etc, so it would be for you to explain to HMRC that your commercial use was valid. The 60/40 rule is an advisory that HMRC will likely not ask you any further questions, although if you had a diesel powered RIB you may struggle to prove any non propulsive use of power.

60/40 also makes it effectively non commercially viable for fishermen to set up a side line in refueling Mobos.

Again excuse my naivety but how would dracula know that I purchased the fuel at commercial rates, do the fuel companies send records of fuel sales by boats to the blood suckers !

Last month at Fox's Marina in Ipswich I was charged £619 for 500 Litres including the 60/40 split

That is £1.238 per litre (£1.43 before 60/40)

I brought fuel from a Tesco service station for around £1.07 at the time (pity it's a bit difficult to get a 44 footer up to the pumps)

When I queried it, I was told that the price had just dropped!!

That just reinforced my decision about putting Sea Dweller on the market

I can't remember, it was so long ago, but I expect i'll need another 50 ltrs top-up sometime before the end of the year. I shall buy it from the local canal wharf, (or possibly a rural garage) they are generally far cheaper than any place near a coastal marina.

It depends whether HMRC choose to check & how you paid.

If you pay by card they have transaction details & a link to you & your bank. If you pay cash, declare "all heating" and supply a false name & address it would be much harder to trace you, altho, there could be a timed video on the pump at a marina. But why would any one want to avoid taxes the pay for schools, NHS, Trident & MP's salaries & expenses?

I was unpleasantly surprised ti find it was still £1.06 at Cobbs Quay with 60/40 and 5% discount in January. Same as it was last Autumn!
