What are you called?

Is it just me, or do you find the collective noun 'Boater' somewhat disparaging? I have noticed what seems to be a rapid increase in the use of this term in all sections of the leisure marine media which I find irritating. Or did I just wake up one morning having spawned a new pet hate?

Anyway, I venture to ask how you good people would describe yourself in the context of owning and running a motorboat?

Regards

Nigel

definitely prefer boater to ....................raggie or even worse yachtsman or sailor!

I tend to use powerboater or motor boater when talking to "non-boat" people.

The real answer is that of course you're right. The generic word is sailor and no reason to abuse the name of a perfectly good hat. I think it's origins are American.

Not applying to this group is the other awful apendage of modern marine journalism, push-pit. The analogy for pullpit is clear and obvious, but it has no opposite and certainly has nothing to do with pulling. The real word for "push-pit" is taffrail and they of all people should no better.

There's an article somewhere recently, maybe Sailing Today or PBO about the misuse of other marine terms.

My school hat in the summer was a straw boater. In the winter it was a red beret. And we had to wear navy gym knickers with a pocket !!!

I shall look forward to an invitation. I still have my school boater in the wardrobe, hasn't been worn for eh-hem err 40 years, outside the occasional bedroom dressing up (no Pauline, nothing like that, just a bit of memory lane stuff).

To migrate in a few short steps from a studious question of entomology, to Pauline's knickers, is a testament to the ingenuity of mankind. It makes one proud!
