my wee offshore 28 is undergoing refit as can be seen in previous posts. There are 4 plywood panels on the ceiling which are covered in foam backed material. I thought I would purchase off white curtain fabric and bond it over the old stuff. what a mess I made. Upholsters tell me foam back materials are no longer available due to fire risk. Can anyone give me info on suppliers of materials which will do the job. Your resorvoir of knowledge is always appreciated.

lots of previous posts about this. Your suppliers are telling porky pies. The PVC with foam back can still be got from Hawke House Marine in Gosport. However the foam is now fire retardent, and the warning I got was that this would crumble in less than 10 years. Personally I used Felt backed carpet sourced from Carpet Right and employed a carpet fitter to do the job on Hi Jude - lots cheaper than other methods.

I searched high and low for foam backed cloth for my boat, but couldn't find any. Foam backed vinyl was no problem.

In the end I used a car finishing cloth which seems fine. Try: http://www.boyriven.co.uk/

as others have said, the foam backing disintegrates after a few years. an alternative is to clean off or replace the plywood panels and stick ordinary upholstery vinyl to them using contact glue (liquid on the wood, spray on the vinyl). you don't get the 'quilted' effect but it looks as good if not better.
