Wet Suit

As a surfer and Scuba diver for over 30 years; for general use buy O Neill suits. Any pro surfer, and I know a few, really rate them as the best even if they are sponsored by other brands. I find back zip suits easier to get into than chest zip, and they flush less through the neck. The O Neill Techno Butter 3, TB 3, is super soft, super stretchy, warm and wears well. After that in order of quality
Excel
Rip Curl
Billabong
Quiksilver

Patagonia and Finisterre are over priced and over rated.

Generally buy quality, GBS seams, glued and blind sticthed.
Agreed, they are very good.
I bought an ONeill Hyperfreak 4/3 wetsuit this winter for surfing and it's a revelation compared to my old one. The Techno butter material is more like wearing clothes rather than neoprene.

Thank you for your input. I just bought one on your recommendation. Of course any future credibility you have now rests on this wetsuit because when it comes to cold water and stiff wetsuits I am a ninny exemplar. :p (I grew up in the water but my cardiac surgeon said no swimming in cold water so it's been a while)

As the fleet scrounger, can I have first dibs [again] when you grow out of it?! :p

PS - Still have that wetsuit and one of Chris' if you need them (y)

You mean the one I gave your boy? Yeah, that was a 6mm and so stiff on my fat gut that after squeezing in and doing the zip up I cut such a young dashing figure the admirable Admiral would invite me back to bed. The only problem was after doing the zip up I went puce after a couple minutes for lack of oxygen. I couldn't breathe! It was a warm wetsuit though, if I didn't mind floating on my back looking like a starfish. Definitely a cut for a young man. Me, I never want to see it again. :ROFLMAO:

No worries, hope you like it. I love mine, comfy and warm.

This was the exact one I got.
The 4/3+ means it is 4.5/3/5mm which seems a small detail but was just right for a couple hours at a time in 8deg water this winter.
Definitely warmer than a 4/3 and not as bulky as a 5/4....

O'Neill Hyperfreak 4/3+mm Chest Zip Wetsuit 2021 - Black

Enjoy

Ah. In your post it said 4/3 no plus, so that's the one I got.

You won't go far wrong with a 4:3. warm enough for all but the coldest conditions in winter but niether too warm or bulky for most summer wear. It's the suit that I wear the most.

O’Neil make by far and away the best ready made suits.

But...

Fit is everything , especially in a surface sports suit and most of us are not anywhere near a standard size so if you want THE warmest suit then a made to measure suit wetsuit is the way to go.

Ive been buying Snugg Wetsuits from Newquay for quite a few years now as the fit and quality is the best I’ve found since Armstrong stopped making suits. I’ve had a few suits from big name brands along the way but only O’Neil has come close to Snugg - for me...

Fit is everything in a wetsuit.... as long as it doesn’t fall apart as some big name brands have a habit of doing.

Well my wetsuit arrived. It's zipperless and you need to be flexible to get in it. Not the easiest when you have lost some movement in the shoulders but I got it on and it fits like a glove. What a difference to the old wetsuit. I can breathe and have full motion. Down side is it accentuates my flat ass and beer belly. However if it keeps me warm as promised then all shall be forgiven and I shall just have to make sure I dont dally on the swim platform for all to comment on the state I am in.

Quite agree. Each make has a slightly different cut and shape, some will fit better than others. Find the brand that best fits your body shape. I know that an O Neill medium tall is perfect for me. That said, it took five different wetsuits of various brands before I found a swimming/triathlon suit that fitted. As you say wully, they all vary.

Also, bear in mind that when you try it on it should really feel a bit tight and small - albeit maybe not so tight as Bruce K!! (y)
As when you try a suit on you are usually warm and in a warm room. Get into cold water and your body contracts, and the suit should then fit. There is nothing worse than having a suit that is too big that flushes through with cold water, it feels horrible and you won't keep warm.

My last suit was a Northern Diver and made to measure, but that was 30+ years ago, at least the goon suit for it still kinda fits a bit but the dry suit it's self was sold on a lot of years ago as it's measurements and my measurements no longer coincide :)
