But if you sail your US or South African or OZ yacht into UK or EU will you contravene any sorts of legislation. I think not so where does the channel interferance or non CE approved equipment stand.

There are alot more issues about visiting yachts and regulations to consider but not in this thread

Not an issue for say US flagged vessels to use non CE certified VHF while in UK waters (unless it's an SC101 set, which is only for use in US territorial waters). If you purchase and put into use a non CE set while in UK waters then up to £5000 fine and confiscation of equipment

For example, take two high quality radios, same model number, except one is Euro designated and CE approved. Yes, there are the channel differences mentioned above but looking at the specifications of the radios (per the manufacturer's manuals), all else is the same such as frequencies of other channel, power, S/N etc. And those specs meet the ones set out in the Ofcom document, except for the differences already highlighted. If they didn't, there would surely be a problem whenever a non EU vessel (a significant proportion of the commercial traffic in the English channel) using non CE marked radios operated them in European waters.

Channel frequencies are different on a number of channels i.e. 88, 11, 80 & 23 toname a few. Incidently if you listen to solent CG weather broadcast on UK 23, you'll missit on a US frequency set as the RX frequency is over 3 MHz down!!

That will make a mockery of the CE / ofcom rules and regs and bring in to question the reason to the rules if they cannot apply to all users of radio equipment in a particular area

My tongue is firmly in my cheek making these comments as being an englishman sailing a south african yacht in the indian ocean with US and South African tickets and radio licence I cone across thic sort of thing all the time, and when I charter in the EU even more confusion.

Think of this, if you had a foreign flaged yacht in the UK but VAT paid in the EU would you be exempt from the UK rule and regs ?
