Wells next the sea

On passage to the Humber from Sussex years ago, I anchored close to the Fairway Buoy off Wells Next the Sea for a sleep. Deep draft I couldn't get in because of the Tide timing so I dropped the hook. Probably the rolliest anchorage I've ever been in! Whether it was the shallows, tide run and wind combination I don't know, but without the lee cloths I would have been on the cabin sole a few times.. :giggle:

I used to love going into Wells when l was based at Fosdyke. Great destination, but I wouldn't have wanted to be based there.

I went a time or two from Surfleet, where are you based now? I always thought it was popular, so I am surprised to see it looking so quiet

Are the pontoons in Wells available for annual berthing? It looks near empty on the webcam!
I spent 3 weeks there a couple of years ago whilst working near by, they told me that was their limit of stay, they do get very busy and rafting up often needed

About 3 years ago I was on a road trip camping at Holt and Wells was full to bursting with yachts, mostly Dutchmen all rafted up.

We have been trying to get there for a couple of years from Harwich but each time we have had northerlies and could not face the slog up the coast ...one day. The harbour staff are incredibly helpful.

I think some of the local larger yachts now use it as the wind cats have move on, also home to the local dredger, the middle sand is common ground so drying out mornings are free. Just not always convenient to get to

Given the proximity to the public beach, the harbour authorities much prefer the crews of visiting yachts to use the 'facilities' at the town pontoon, so the 'outer harbour' is kept almost exclusively for annual berth holders. The only visitor I can recall seeing berthed there was 'Peter Duck', after she had suffered engine failure and needed to stay for several weeks.
