We didn't get to France after the fiasco on Wednesday, when we were planning to go on Thursday, I began to get all the gale warnings e.t.c on the Naxtex, and so we thought better of it and raced off to Yarmouth on Thrusday Morning. Again we had troubles rafting up because when we ased to go alongside a Yacht, we were again told NO!!!!!/forums/images/icons/mad.gif Because the skipper said he was leaving "soon". Luckily another boat just left then and we nipped into his spot. What made me really cross was that the Yacht who told us we couldn't raft up was still there when we left on Friday Lunchtime but he allowed another Yacht to raft up to him about 30 mins after we arrived. WHY? /forums/images/icons/mad.gif /forums/images/icons/mad.gif /forums/images/icons/mad.gif /forums/images/icons/mad.gif /forums/images/icons/mad.gif Is it just because I am a MoBo? Should I expect this all summer?
Anyway, Gale warning in hand and after spending a peaceful day in Yarmouth (nearly got to Freshwater in the dinghy) we set off on Friday to have a look at Newtown Creek and then on to Chichester to get there before low water. We had to battle through an Easterly F6/7 sea in the Eastern Solent, I think the wind arrived a little earlier than was expected.
As we went up Chichester Harbour, just before Itchenor we were "intercepted" by a Speedboat with a load of young louts on, they were racing around us (literally around us) at 20 knots causing huge amounts of wash, swamping little dinghies e.t.c So I gave him 5 blasts of my horn and called up the Harbour Master to tell him what was going on. The HM was very efficient because as we rounded the next bend he was waiting in the middle of the channel!!!! He He He!!
It is people like that who give us a bad name.
Anyway, in short we had a great time apart from not going to Cherburg

Glad you had a good time despite not getting to France. Stuck alongside at the moment like others so nice to hear stories from the water even if a bit frustrating.

I think you can expect the same reaction from Raggies whenever wanting to raft alongside although it might be because some think that yachts and mobos don't sit well together like that. That may have been the skippers motivation for being a git.

Is it me or is the Solent a rough old place when it's windy, I'm often surprised by the conditions, what speed were you able to maintain in the F6/7

Guess its the famous solent chop your refering to, whilst the isle of wight provides protection from servere southerlies, my guess is its the SE or SW winds combined with fast tides that can create the W.A.T chop. Only a guess mind, I'll welcome correction from experienced solent cruisers if I'm out on this.

Must have been slamming a bit if it was a true F6-7, would have shaken yer fillings out.

When there is no alternative berth my personal approach to this one is to say 'fine! I'll let you out when you want to leave!" then go alongside anyway.

another good approach is to shout "CATCH" as you chuck him a mooring rope - se if he has the balls to chuck it back !!!!
