Weight of keel on Caprice 19

I'm not sure if this really answers the question but the ballast is quoted as 700/750lbs in my little book. I don't know whether the two figures relate to different keel types or the change from hard chined plywood boats to round bilge GRP ones. The displacement is just quoted as 1900 lbs but two figures viz 145 / 168 sq ft are given for the sail area.

Thanks for that.
I'm new to sailing.....is the "gist" of the figures you quoted that the keel is unlikly to weigh any more than about 750 lbs (340kg)?
A guy this afternoon told me it was about a ton and a half just for the keel. This sounded whey too much to me...

Exellent, thanks for the help. I can now sleep slightly more easiliy in the knowledge that I can transport the keel on my trailer and that I don't have to hire a large van!

Should have started by saying welcome to the forum. So welcome.

The displacement figure of 1900 lbs (863 Kg if you prefer) is the total weight (mass, if you want to be pedantic) of the boat. So anyone who suggests the keel is 1½ tons is seriously ill-informed.

Having said that, with all the gear and other junk on board the total weight is likely to be a bit higher . That is something to remember if you will be towing the boat in regard to trailer capacity and max towing capablity of the towing vehicle

I cannot help with your original enquiry, but I want to tell you that I really enjoyed sailing my bilge keel Caprice. I bought it as a stop gap when I was between boats, and kept it for six years. It is a real sea boat, and any average person on a boat that size is big and strong, so everything is easy.
I suppose you know about Super Shrimp, the Caprice that circumnavigated?
