We’re having here fun now in F12 in Esbjerg Harbour.
Big wind generator transport vessel, ‘Taipan Scan’, moored in front of us, broke his moorings and went careening across the harbour.
They now have 2 tugs on him but they cannot re-moor him as the water is higher than the mooring bollards and the line men cannot get near them. At one point to avoid being blown on to the far side, he went full ahead to try to turn but it was too late and the wind had him and he rammed the quayside at about 4 knots. He then slewed sideways and fetched up pretty hard against one of the moored supply boats.
He also has 4 or 5 floating hatch covers alongside and one them has broken free and gone round his stern, and could well damage his rudder and prop and the broken tether lines are now round his prop. The remaining covers are being smashed up and down his hull.
The only thing they can do now, as he is now pushed on the lee quay side, is to leave him there with the 2 tugs attached until the weather or tide drops enough to secure him.

Just a few hours we will be tied up in Loyang, S'pore. Its about F 3 -4 coming down the bottom bit of the S. China Sea. Lots, and lots of big boaties around though and from the sounds of the vhf seem to be manned by "3rd world" if they can be bothered to go up to the wheelhouse.
Look after yourself George, sod the company and start somewhere warmer. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

In theroy back in Barcelona 26th Jan - but it depends when we are due to leave S'pore, as yet unknown. If we get stuffed with the tow to Burma maybe 2 weeks late going home. Thank goodness the boss does not read this - I have not had the balls to tell her yet!!!

He was supposed to phone me on Boxing Day to go out for a drink on the 27th. No sign of him and wasn't in the pub either. Also can't raise him on the phone.

Re: The morning after....................

Monday morning. The vessel has damaged rudder, prop, bow and is taking on water along the hull. Captain ignored Harbourmaster reccommendation to lift hatches on the morning prior to the storm. Also when his mooring ropes were parting, our skipper called the harbourmaster at least 15 mins before the other skipper reported a problem. Also, they are now obviously off charter due to the damage. All in all, not a good day for the Captain of that vessel. I imagine he is in deep doodoo now.

We are the Owners of the TAIPAN SCAN, which is a new purchase of ours and ofcourse quite a bad start. She has been trading between Esbjerg Denmark and Scotland with windmill's/blades/nacelles etc. for a while and was now just about to load a new load for Portugal, after which scheduled to load Spain for Far East (upto Australia) with some heavy equipment/project cargo.

After the problems in Esbjerg she has now been towed by tug to Delfzijl in Holland for repairs of hull, propeller and rudder.

Thanks for the pictures, which are quite interesting. From where have they been taken ? From another cargovessel or ??

We have one more sistervessel THOR SCAN which presently in Nigeria, sailing tomorrow in ballast for Brazil and Argentina to load general cargo and project cargo back for Europe, after which she will enter the windmill contracts. Furthermore have some 10/20 chartervessels in world-wide trade with Project/heavylift/RoRo and dangerous goods. If intr You may look at our website www.scan-trans.com

I am personally a Yachtsman myself, sailing X-382 crusing and a bit of regatta. Have sailed down to Dover-SCUK-N.France and back again along the Belgian, Dutch, German coastline and back on the Eider Canal to Denmark. Last year sailed to former DDR, Poland, Russia (Kaliningrad), Estonia, Latvia and via Gotland to Sweden and down back to Denmark. Got arrested in Russia at high sea, escorted back to Baltiysk with two armed guards onboard etc... SOme experience.

What a nice thought of you, Peter, to post this here!

I have followed this extraordinary thread from the beginning.
It starts off with a forum member that mails to the forum from Esbjerg harbour in wind F12.
When others ask for foto's, these are posted the same afternoon.
Today the owner of the Taipan Scan tells his story.

And I (some 20 miles from Delfzijl) can see on http://www.aislive.com how the Taipan Scan is tugged in by the 'Boxer' with a speed of 8 knots.

I'd be interested to hear from which ship You made Your observations and monitores the VHF correspondences. If possible would appr to have Your email and phone-number as might have a few questions to ask You, hoping You could help us clarify a few uncertain points about the developments during the gale.
