WC Privacy

Be careful with solid toilet doors when single handed. The handle came off the inside of mine and I pushed the spindle out when trying to put it back. I was locked in until the crew rescued me. The previous week I was single handed and if it had happened then it could have been very serious!!

Heard 23, a lovely boat, I have one, and only have privacy because I sail single handed. The heads is under the chart table which makes good use of the space as I don’t need to do both at the same time.
On the other hand, multi tasking those 2 would a triumph of sailing efficiency.

What sold our boat to Mrs C was the solid door on the heads. No small boat has complete privacy of course. It’s a compromise, decide what you can tolerate within your budget. And my suggestion, do your serious business under way when possible. No need to worry about noise. And likely anyone else on board will be on deck.

The 22’ Cirrus has a solid door that doubles as a saloon and heads door, so it is possible. When we were looking in the 28’ range we saw the Merlin with aft heads but the accommodation was so compromised that we ended up with a Sadler 29 and learned to live with a zipped screen (but a good bulkhead door). I don’t think you are going to get privacy until you move up to the Fulmar-type range in practice.

Hi all, first post, bit niche.
Retiring, sailed dinghies as kid & teens, in 20's-30's with father on his Sadler 32, had 17' Hurley silhouette for few years then work/life pressure intruded.
Looking to get back & natural pull is to older yachts like Contessa 26 & 32/Twister/Halmatic/Centurian 32
Problem is very few seem to offer any WC privacy-just a curtain or open to fwd berths. Rivals & Nich 32 seem to be only ones offering any enclosure. From recollection the Sadler was also deficient in this.
Saw favourable review of Contessa (aren't they all) with only downside didn't want to be doing a poo only 6" away from mate's wife with just a curtain & I realised that I identified with that, no-matter I imagine mostly it'll be just me.
Any alternatives that do offer a modicum of privacy in the privvy?

IIRC, my Halmatic 30 had probably the best heads compartment I know of in a sub 30ft boat and yes, it was enclosed.

Much depends on whether you mean family, friends, or strangers. Basically, family have to put up with whatever you have to offer, friends will conceivably endure anything for the pleasure of your company, while strangers are an unknown quantity. If men, you can usually get away with almost anything, but female species may have limits to what they will tolerate without jumping ship.

The Cornish Crabber 24 circa 1994 had a separate heads with a solid door. But I recall was only really big enough for two on board.

The somewhat unusual Jeanneau Sun Way 29 of a similar age has a very spacious heads located by companionway and with a solid door, can just about sensibly sleep four as well.

Is this just a British thing ?

You sometimes see continental men weeing from the deck in marinas.
Blokes on the beach exchanging swimming costumes for Y fronts.

No-one seems too bothered. We all have the same plumbing after all. :)

Being British, I like idea above of a radio going in the heads. Possibly automatic when you lock the door.

Consider a Moody 33mk2 - I'm biased as I have one! Centre cockpit with a separate toilet area with door. Also Moody Mk1, different layout with a full width toilet area. Depends on your budget, usually under £19,000.

I think the idea is that the radio is in the saloon such that others can listen to that noise rather than your noise.

I remember doing a mile builder on a sigma 38 out of Conwy many years ago and a fellow crew was a larger lady verging on big unit with a corresponding appetite. We really could have done with a radio.

Uffa Fox one ofEnglands greatest sailors and naval architects apparently issued instructions to his shipwrights from the toilet …..with the door open ,one of our countries eccentrics😂

I had a friend with a Heard 23. Originally these had a separate heads in the corner of the saloon, but he didn't think it was a good use of space and removed the partitions. He gained an extra seat in the saloon (so long as you'd put the lid down), at the cost of some privacy.
When I pointed this out to him he said not to worry, he'd thought of that, and pulled across a curtain that hung from a track in the ceiling. A fine idea except it only came down to about the user's shoulder height.
I presume he was working on the ostrich principle, that if you can't see someone, they can't see you.
That's......... just ........not........right........ICK! Never thought of myself as a demure wallflower, will have to reassess.
