Spotted the following news story which may be of interest to anyone who does a bit of water skiing. Apparently it was the poor sod's wife at the wheel.

"A waterskier has been killed after colliding with the speed boat that was towing him.
The 33-year-old victim went into the back of the boat just east of Brighton's two main piers near the entrance to the marina.

He was transferred to the Royal Sussex County Hospital but certified dead on arrival.

A spokeswoman for the Maritime and Coastguard agency said the man was injured on Monday when he collided with the stern of the boat.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends at this time," she said.

"We understand that it was not a hire boat, we believe that it belonged to the man or his family."

I agree it is almost impossible.
I strongly suspect the newspapers have got this wrong. I can see no way that a waterskier is going to collide with the back of a boat even on a short line, the forward momentum of the boat even if the engine was cut would not allow the skier to catch up and collide with the stern with sufficient force to do that amount of damage.

I am afraid it was probably a run down situation.
