My perkins 40108 is working well and pumping out a healthy looking exhust/water mix. Problem is that there is also water running out of the (anti syphon?) vent which runs to the top of the tank where I belive the sea water and exhaust are mixed. (excuse my incapability to remember any technical names whatsover!!).
Can anyone tell me.. is the water aproblem?? it is a steady trickle rather than a jet.
Regards

On our previous boat we had a Perkins 4.108 (very reliable engine!) with a header tank on the port side of the engine. (I believe some engines have the header tanks fitted crossways at the front).

If this "anti-syphon vent" you describe is attached below the filler cap, it is not an anti-syphon vent, but the overflow from the header tank. When the header tank is filled to the top and the engine heats up, the water expands and consequently a quantity overflows. Repeated topping up only continues the 'problem'.

To avoid this constant overflow, we noted the 'natural' water level in the header tank ater a few hours running, and did not fill above this level.

The sea water and exhaust are not mixed in the header tank, but immediately after it (if fitted on the port side) - before the rubber (if you have one) exhaust hose.

I hope this is of some use, and my comments are based on the 4.108 with which I am familiar. All engines are different and your engine may be configured differently!

I presume your problem is not as Discovery2 resolved but the antisiphon
device from the waterlock. These devices exist in 2 variants: one where you
connect it to an overflow pipe taken overboard, the other has a valve held
closed by the exhaust pressure (so no 'leak'); when the pressure drops the
valve opens and breaks the siphon. You seem to have the first type, which
is preferable IMHO (no valves to stick, salt up...).
A clear drawing shows them on http://www.vetus.nl. Click on English,
then Sales Program, then Exhaust.

Thanks guys.
The problem is with the sea water side.
I gave discovery 2 the wrong picture due to my usual inability to remember names of (usual critical) bits of gear!! (but the info on the header tank issue will be remembered)
I guess that this problem is not a problem after all....thank you Anchorite!!
I have only had the boat a year and mainly in the marina where I see only the starboard side at close quarters.
We were in Crinan canal when I saw this trickle, I reasoned that itwas on the sea water side of the system but was then perturbed to find (on tasting) that the water was FRESH i'd tasted about half a cup full before I remembered that the canal is fresh water!! had to go to the pub for a mouth wash!!

Thanks again I am reassured!!
