Watching Below Decks

I've watched far too many episodes than I'm happy to admit. It can be addictive viewing. However, Captain Lee really did start to believe his own hype. Every 2nd conversation appeared to be him losing his cool and some kind of 'near trademark' expletive would come out of his mouth. Hard reality for him is that health issues seemed to scupper him and got replaced with a younger model.

But casual amusement aside, most of this nonsense is based around dysfunctional crew members who are all but guaranteed to fall out, have sex, and mostly both. They also allow the crew to repeatedly go out and get utterly smashed on alcohol and then drag them through reprimands when they misbehave or appear to bring the ship into disrepute. Not to mention their utter disregard for respect of authority. I would say of the (cough) many many episodes i've watched, I'd have fired around 80-90% of the crew for not respecting authority at one time or another..

I started off finding it kinda amusing but now I find it pretty sad that we basically encourage an entire generation to entirely chase money and sex and to enable them by all but pouring the alcohol down their necks to provide us with the entertainment.

Love seeing boats on TV but the show is appalling.

That describes the 1980's, although back then there was also lots of cocain. It's certainly not worse than the 80s, and I'd argue things have improved.

I wouldn't. I regularly go back to the 80's TV (my era growing up) and yep it happened etc but most of it was far less 'reality' which I think is the point. Miami Vice, Magnum, Bergerac, Howards Way.... etc etc etc.. All escapism TV. Below Deck etc portray themselves as factual reality and the emotional destruction that goes on is factual. People are genuinely doing this nonsense and it spills off the TV too, judging by recent events with a certain superyacht tender crash.

Once you put in tv cameras the type of person who applies follows the same pattern….they want to parlay the appearance into a big house and several operations on their face and front. It’s chasing fame when you are without talent or relevance….and that requires you to be as outrageous as you can….the modern world rewards boorish behaviour…immensely. It’s the footballer’s lifestyle without the athlete commitment or even having to have one as a boyfriend
