A good friend of ours has just bought a mk1 Warrior 35 built in 1969. A lovely boat for her age but the galvenised wire rope that runs from the rudder to the wheel pedestal is very corroded, As access is very limited we wondered if anyone out there had replaced the wires themselves or is it a specialist job, Cheers, Mike

The control cables running between the wheel and the rudder quadrant are not so much specific to the boat as to the binnacle. If its a standard binnacle, e.g. a Whitlock, you could contact them.

I replaced mine recently on a similar sized yacht and the system used is typical of that installed on many boats in the last 20 years. Stainless steel wire running in polyethylene conduit with an ID of ½" or so. Replacing was a reasonably straightforward DIY job. As you say access was limited but the runs have to be no more than moderately curved, so that the wires and conduits could be pulled out and simply pushed back into place again. Where a sharper angle is needed, a turning block is fitted.

The old cables were undone at the rudder end and withdrawn, the new ones greased (winch grease) and simply pushed through. Before doing so though the conduits need inspection, any wear anywhere along and they should be replaced as well. As they can get scuffed internally on bends, its a good idea to replace them anyway.
