If I buy a house brand new I get a 5 year NHBC warranty,
Expensive car, 3 year warranty.
Sealine boat, way more expensive than any house or car I've ever bought, 1 year warranty. And they are sticking to it.

What warranty do other manufacturers offer on their brand new expensive boats??

I bought a new Italian made boat (Sessa) in 2002, 5 year hull warranty and 3 year on the Volvo engines. I believe Volvo only give a one year warranty now.

Not sure how much "expensive" is in boating terms but yes it cost more than I paid for my house 9 years ago.......

My first NEW boat was a Maxum 2900scr - Brilliant boat and came with 1year Merc Warranty on the engines, up to 1 year on other bits and pieces and a 5 year hull warranty on the plastic bits. The hull warranty was really picky though with loads of conditions re this and that. This January we hauled her out and discovered some osmotic blistering near the strbrd leg after only 30 months since new!!. This was beside a filled hole originally used by the jig in the factory in Mexico and it had been poorly plugged and sealed after building. After several letters and phone calls to Maxum HQ in USA, I just gave up claiming and sold the boat with the defect highlighted anyway, which was repairable during anti-fouling. Irritating at the time and typical of the wriggling that these massive companies sometimes can perform when taken to book on their warranty tickets by individuals who are unable or unwilling to go to expensive litigation.

By the way, don't you get a 10 year NHBC these days?? We used to and may still do so in Scotland anyway. Also, I am changing my boat in about two years and fancy the F43 as having experienced the F33, I am smitten with this style of boat. What's it like, owning and using yours Paul??? I also fancy an equivalent sized, but older if need be, Princess or Phantom to keep within budget of around £230 to £250k

The warranty of 12 months is meaningless withn the law. As I see it the law provides that the goods should last a reasonable time and therefore be guaranteed to do so. So in practice you may be able to calim up to a period of more like 6 years - not just 12 months.

Say your boat developed a major problem in year 3 - the law would probably determine that is should have reasonably lasted longer than that and hence your consumer rights would protect you and make the dealer recify the fault.

I am no lawyer so I stand to be corrected on my understanding of the law by some around here no doubt.

I agree but unfortunately the only way to excercise the law is to sue someone and that costs, whereas if a warranty is in place it should be a straight forward warranty claim. Most people won't want to have to sue to get a resolution to a problem.

Perhaps it is 10 years now, its a good 27 years since I last bought a house! You can only just get a decent tender now for what I paid for it then.

Anyway, F43 is an outstanding, brilliant boat. Everything we have done with her she has accomodated with ease and aplomb, she's like a tardis inside, the saloon is gigantic and we have decided to better the accomodation design and room we have to get to at least a Manhattan 64. Small problems with quality on very minor details, only ongoing concern is with electrics, ie. 240v seems a little "obscure" with regard to wiring diagrams, compliance possibly. Also 12v is interesting when something goes wrong, eg. no obvious traces for supplies/fuses etc.

But I repeat, absolutely one of the best boats upon the high seas, IMVHO. (Now have I beaten about the bush at all there dear?) Paul

Yes, little niggly things, WC's not retaining water in bottom of bowl after flush, thus smell from holding tank (on rare occasions), lights on dials on flybridge still out after they fixed compass wiring defect months ago, VHF repeater handset just gone US and now totally dead. Unfortunately Sealine, very nice, but firm, "Had it over 12months, no waranty here, we'll send the name of our electrician, £20 an hour!" Probably know we're not into T60, so not worth bothering perhaps. Dissappointed more than anything I suppose, still, Love the Boat, take a lot to put me off her!!. Paul

Cheers Paul - Yes its incredible how values of property have risen in the last 20 odd years!!

Thanks for the glowing report on living with the F43. We love the spacious interior and think this is a lot of boat for the money too. Nearer the time I might ask you for more advice if thats ok with you.

Agree with everything you say about the F43. We had a 410 which was pretty much the same as the F43 and she did everything we wanted including sleeping 13 drunken bodies on millenium night. Good sea boat, amazing space inside and the most reliable boat I've owned. Should be a future classic only it wont be because its a Sealine
If you want a long warranty try an Azimut. My boat has what they call a 5yr 'master warranty' which covers most major items including the major engine bits. Fortunately, I have'nt had to make a claim yet so I cant tell you how secure the warranty is
