Warps Squeaking

It usually comes from where the "work hardened" lines go round the bollard on the pontoon. I found the solution is to slip rubber hose over the lines around the bollards.

Are you sure it is squeaking on the cleat, or is it the warp creaking as it comes under tension? For the latter (which is what we usually suffer), you need some degree of elasticity in the warp - a compensator or snubber.

If you have the luxury of two shore cleat/rings, cross the lines (port shore to stbd on boat and vv).

Depending on how close you are to the quay, it can easily double the line length which halves the stretch.

Or longer lines.... Change the lead angles, long springs and headlines/ stern lines....

No wonder there are so many palstic bags in the oggin

Sorry - it must be everyone elses bags floating about !

More helpfully I could have said that if you know the person on the other side of your pontoon is not coming aboard then it sometimes helps to use the cleats on the other side of the pontoon so that the warps are pulling more sideways and less downwards - this readuce stress on lines substantially and reduces squeek

Old polyester lines are as bad or worse than old nylon since they are so rigid. I keep a pair of newish nylon lines with snubbers for any line that might cause trouble. Careful attention to how you are moored helps but won't eliminate squeaks on certain cleats, especially those alloy ones used in some marinas. I've never had much luck with washing-up liquid.

The only answer I find other than fiddling with bits of rubber is to use good new lines, eliminate short lines and use snubbers.
