Unless the boat is registered or has some sort of official documentation - radio licence etc I dont think you actually need to tell anyone.

Dont do it, they say it brings bad luck to the boat and owner, if its changed, im afraid the last one forus was, it had its name changed 3 times since new in 1991, wont go into the details as to what happened though.

Arr but wot about if next lucky owner needs a bit of finance or when i nip to calais and the man on the quay sees the outline of the old name underneath me new one.

...after all those warnings?

If yes, and if the boat has a radio station with its international call sign, be aware that normally a name should have been associated with the call sign (together with the EPIRB and DSC codes, if requested).
This is put into a database available to all the public services which could be involved in a rescue operation.
Therefore, you'd better update it in order to avoid confusion/doubts to whoever might receive an emergency call from your boat... or alternatively, remember to use the old name in such situations, but I'd recommend the first alternative.

For communicating any change, you should check the procedure in the country where the boat is registered.
