Want to buy Bembridge Harbour

I would have thought that a few of the forums more solvent Solent sailors could have a whip round and treat the rest of the South Coast Branch to a nice Christmas present. :D
Then run it as a charitable (Thus getting any available tax benefits)co-operative, possibly along the lines of preserved railways with a small permanent staff and a pool of volunteers..., maybe rename it "Good Value Marina". :)

Bembridge Harbour - Value for Money

Although a price has yet to be formally announced, "in the region of £3m" is mentioned in the Times article (Sat 19th Dec); anyone who knows the harbour and its history will tell you that this is far too high. No one sensible would consider even paying half that price.

Do we want to make an offer?

That would be a lottery dream wouldn't it?

"The sheltered harbour at the mouth of the River Yar left public ownership at the end of the 1960s having previously been in the hands of British Rail."

I see that it is the Eastern Yar. Does this actually connect up with Western Yar at Yarmouth? Nothing much more than a ditch for miles, I would guess.

No, no ditch they are connected at the "wide ends" by about 20 miles of good sailing water though.

Looks to me as though it will end up like Keyhaven. There seem to be too many restrictions on the activities of the owner to make it a viable concern so you will not see a properly funded company like D & R or MDL taking over.

It is a shame as it seems that "Good intentions" will kill this harbour, but no doubt the RSPB would like nothing better than to see the whole place silted up.

I think that you'd have to be mad.

Work your way through some of this ...

Is ANYBODY happy there?

Interesting link from the harbour users group to this story

There is a growing call to refer the Caernarfon Harbour Trust to the secretary of state due to their 'high' charges (My opinion). My fees are nearly four times as much as Chichester's dues. I have been told there is a group of Menai Strait users who want to inspect Caernarfon's books and see where all the money goes.

I three years ago I asked via the Trust's solicitors for sight of their accounts, but they didn't even reply to me.

Interesting background to the story if you google bembridge harbour and barry blatch.
It rather looks like there are alot of local issues and quirks surrounding ownership to say the least. Aside from the fact that bembridge harbour trust appears to have been established to purchase the harbour with some influential local backing

From the Trust's website
"The Bembridge Harbour Trust has the aim, when the opportunity arises, of purchasing Bembridge Harbour from its current owners".

Looks like you'd have a competitive bid situation unless you bring them onside

Other than this, I'd be up for it ;-)

What a wonderful idea !

Keyhaven and Beaulieu are the only two rivers left on the North Solent coast. How wonderful to regain one on the Island shore also.
I am at a loss to understand why so many "sailors" leave one marina to sail to and park in another - identical - one in a different spot. A bit like soulless caravan parks.
I have always found Keyhaven a delight - no b***y pontoons full of parked boats with flapping halyards.
Yeah - OK - call me old fashioned ! I shall be happy to anchor behind Dulcibella.
