Wally 118 on top gear

Strange

Yeah, I thought it was a strange outcome myself especially when you saw how lumpy and recalcitrant the AM gear changes were and it looked a right dog on the track in the Stig's hands. Probably just a blinkered reaction to Ferrari winning everything all the time. It would ceretainly be the 575 for me

Re: me too please!

he bort a merc SL tho? No question that the ferrari kit other than brakes, gearboox and engine is flimsy, but at least they don't really pretend otherwise.

Oh, and the red paint is very soundly stuck on with a ferrari, innit. Cept it changes colour over time, so although they are all painted the same colour, older ferraris look more red than new ones.

Would enzo spin in his grave? Nah - he started by doing the racing for alfa romeo, so he must be a good laugh...

Erm, not sure I agree on the flimsy bit. The engine, gearbox and brakes aren't though, so that leaves the body? Nope, pretty rigid. Suspension? Nope, the Fiorano handling pack sorted that (pretty much all 575's have it). So it must be the seats then?

Re: me too please!

yeah, the seats with shortlasting memory and quick-release stitching. Also the aircon that chucks water in the footwells, the windscreen wipers that are great as long as it doesn't rain, the lights that are fine as long as it's not dark, and the pillarless passenger/drivers windows that are nice thin weightsaving glass but which bend and get sucked open above 130 so yer ears bleed. It's for reasons like this that the little group of rental ferraris that periodically drive south through through france do indeed belt along at 120+ but then stop for a long rest and a bit of tinkering once all the saloon cars have gone past. Ferraris are specifically built for about 3000miles a year, and only in sunshine. Mind you, the db's are built to mug someone for 5 times what it cost to buy the ford bits, so not bad overall. imho!

Was under the impression that Clarkson's latest steed was actually a Volvo XC90...

Re: me too please!

Well, I'm a great believer in relying on personal experience and it the risk of sounding slightly boastful (I'm not, and am fully aware that a 575 is certainly not top of the tree when compared to an Enzo, Zonda, F1 etc) here's a quick summary of faults on the last 4 road cars I've owned/own.

BMW M5 - clutch exploded, 2 sets of discs warped, comms pack replaced.
Porsche 911 C4 - leaking door, failed wheel bearing, wouldn't start (had to be recovered).
VW Touareg V10 - Wipers fell off, wouldn't start (recovered), air bag faults (still present) for 12 months.
Ferrari 575M - Erm, well, it's a bit thirsty. Aircon works (no water ingress), wipers too (even when raining), same for lights (not so good in daylight though), glass is fine even at 175mph. In fact it just works. Oh, it's a faster, better handling car than the the Vanquish, according to Top Gear, who reckon the they'd choose the Vanquish cos it's worse. Hmm.

Still, that's just my experience, imho of course /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: me too please!

fairynuff. I too have blown up a 3-series, although i was a rental car and i did it as an experiment to see what it'd be like at 90 in second gear, ahem.

My italian car experience is not quite as happy as yours, did 25,000 miles in a 456M a while back. Whilst the engine etc seems strong, the ancillary running gear isn't, so door handles become floppy and so on.

But anyway, i do sympathise that TG reckon your car is somehow not as good as the DB wotsit. Praps the 575 is a teeny bit uglybugger? Ooer, i've dun it now. Mind you the db is no oil painting imho...

Did he? Poor bloke! Having said that, everyone I see driving SL's have perms so maybe it suits him. . . . . . /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Prefer Ferraris in Giallo Modena myself.

Enzo would spin having brits doing his racing for him while he paid! /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Bugger, missed it, I knew I shouldn't have stayed for dinner at the Spinnaker.

I like JFM tried to buy a DB9 in the summer and was told: certainly sir, which day in Sept 2006 are you available to take delivery? Got the same schpeel about having a DB7 in the meantime and went for it, must say though, I think it is fantastic. Traded in a '96 wide bodied volante against it 'cause it was an absolute liability to own, and have not looked back.

I believe that I am high on the list for the new AMV8 when it comes out next year, so might forget about the DB9 until premiums disappear...

Re: me too please!

I'm a bit behind the times to be fair - the last Ferrari I had much to do with was a 355 and that was fragile - every electrical system required faith and although you don't buy a modena motor and worry about running costs, I felt £5k to replace a failed alternator was a little cheeky. . . . . . /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Re: me too please!

You got off lightly with the Toerag I think - even the long term test one with CAR mag blows up engines regularly!

To be fair to the AM, despite being quite a bit heavier and having a dodgy gearbox it went round the track within a fraction of the time of the Ferrari and even JC said he was disappointed with the Ferrari track time. What sealed it of course was the fact that the AM sounded better! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: me too please!

Indeed you can. The standard 575 sounds very subdued. The solution is <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.magnumyacht.net>http://www.magnumyacht.net - Princess P42

Clarkson\'s Ferrari

If I remember rightly, he was overcome with lust whilst testing an F355 in sunny climes a few years back, and bought one (soft top) for himself. A few months after taking delivery, he wrote a piece moaning about the fact that he'd hardly used it because convertible Italian supercars weren't very practical in the UK, it never seemed to be the right car for the journey, whatever he was doing, etc. etc. Oh - and it was the wrong colour (yellow) as well. I think he sold it.

Was I hallucinating, or did they say that the standard DB9 did a circuit of the TG Track in the same time as the £50,000 more expensive Vanquish? What's all that about, then?

PS My last 4 cars (all mass market repmobiles or family estates) haven't had any mechanical problems at all. Evidently you have to spend pots of money to get a decent breakdown, nowadays /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.

Technically brilliant - but cosmetically challenged (I'd still like one!). I thought it looked like one of those stealth boats that the Swedish Navy has...speaking of which - I bet that the military would be interested in its capabilities.

Wally - She is Gorgeous

Why does everyone think she is ugly?

Seen her once now and the looks will stay in my mind forever. I accept some of the mag photos do not do her justice but the lines 'in life' are incredible and the colours are only rivalled by the best out of the Riva sheds.

All power to their elbow .. if only I had a few bob spare ...

Experience .. absolutely

I've grown out of most of it (honest) BUT :-

M3 - New engine (warranty) , gearbox rebuild
348 - ( more Fiat than the real thing).... REBUILT engine, new gearbox, Windscreen refitted 3 times due leaks, Driver seat 'let go ' at 70 mph... , electrical problems ( too lazy to post them all), Pax side door opened at least once between re-hanging ( 4 times?) ... 3 years ownership and 7.000 miles !!!
911 SC ( remember them?) -- Perfect .. No electrics, awful gearbox, bills lot less than Prancing Horse. ( Ignore the fact the Touareg is a Cayenne )
Never owned a MB but 100,000 cabbies (and 1 AMG thief) can not be wrong

Anyone got a nice 968 for sale?
