Another vote for baofeng, slight downside of the uv5r over the uv3r is that the 5r needs 8v for the charger where the 3r is usb. By coincidence is wired my charger in this morning, luckily the Degen 1103 ssb reciever also needs 8v so there was an ebay buck converter in already. The baofeng is now the boat "phone" in the anchorage where most people use ch72 to get in touch. It does dual watch as well so you can monitor 72 & 16 if you want.Interesting idea getting a Baofeng. Would also be a good backup for the marine VHF if anything went wrong with it, and you would have at least 2 of them, maybe more!

Go for it! Probably a ham club near you, interesting and doesn't cost much to get licensed.
