Walkie Talkies

Interesting idea getting a Baofeng. Thanks.
Would also be a good backup for the marine VHF if anything went wrong with it, and you would have at least 2 of them, maybe more!
It appears they now have a waterproof version, the BaoFeng GT-3WP

Another vote for baofeng, slight downside of the uv5r over the uv3r is that the 5r needs 8v for the charger where the 3r is usb. By coincidence is wired my charger in this morning, luckily the Degen 1103 ssb reciever also needs 8v so there was an ebay buck converter in already. The baofeng is now the boat "phone" in the anchorage where most people use ch72 to get in touch. It does dual watch as well so you can monitor 72 & 16 if you want.
Good piece of kit.

Unless a licensed route would be a better option

Go for it! Probably a ham club near you, interesting and doesn't cost much to get licensed.

I am intermediate licenced already but I wasn't sure which route to take with regards to buying options, as some of the people I sail with aren't ham or VHF licensed, hence the "Walkie Talkie (PMR)" post.
Cheers.
