I have a Walker Excelsior IV Log - the cord from the log to the spinner rotted and was thrown away 25 years ago. Any record I kept of the length and where to position the sinker along the log line has been lost.
I'd now like to set it up and use it again. Does anyone have any idea what the line length and sinker position should be?

...for less than "x" knots, line length 100ft, sinker 2ft ahead of rotator.

If you've still got the box, it's pasted inside it along with exhortations to use Walker's Ship Log Oil and to unscrew the flywheel and oil the bearing from time to time.

Unfortunately I cannot remember whether "x" is 7,9 or 12 knots - all I remember is that my old girl usually does less than "x", so 100ft is OK.

There is no magic about the line itself, except it has to go into the hole in the head of the spinner and have a Figure 8 tied in it, and it should be braided. There are lots of nice synthetics around now that meet the bill...

Is it the same length for the later Walker log? Reason I ask is that I have two spinners both with different lenths of line attached - both a lot shorter than 100ft.

Dunno, but I've got a friend who's got one - will ask him. I've an idea it might be 70ft.

If the line is too short the spinner will skip out and under-read.
