Does anyone know if a 1973 model was meant to have aremote cut off other than by using the throttle control and if not has anyone the knowledge re how and to what to fit one. I'd like to fit one via a cable from the cockpit. Thanks

My MD2B is about that age (1972 I think) that has a conventional "stop" cable. I think it works by closing the throttle further than can be done with the throttle control itself (in my case a single lever "morse").

From memory, it works on the same "lever" as the throttle itself (a quadrant shaped piece of metal) but whereas the throttle cable is attached from the rear of the engine, the stop cable is attached to the front. There is a small bracket about level with the end of the cylinder block to which the sheathing of the control cable attaches, about 5-6" of the inner core is exposed beyond there - it goes through a hole on the quadrant, and then has a nut/bolt mounted on it. With the stop cable pushed fully home it does not affect the movement of the throttle. When it is pulled out it first closes the throttle fully (acting against the throttle cable), and then closes it a bit further still - stopping the engine.

Sorry that's not the most lucid explanation - if you have any more specific questions let me know and I will look in more detail next time I am on the boat. I have just bought a new cable, but have not yet got round to fitting it.

Engine stop is by a separate cable , not the throttle, and it is absolutely feasible, and simple, to fit a long bowden cable to the cockpit. Most engine component company's carry a stock of stop cables, available by length.
Remember, the stop mechanism will not return to the "on" position automatically, so you need to be sure to push the button in again, after stopping the engine. Many so called starting problems relate to the stop mechanism not being fully returned.
Good luck.

Interesting - that sounds like a different configuration to mine. In mine the stop cable / throttle act in direct competition - so pulling the stop cable actually pulls the throttle lever back, and increasing throttle pulls the stop cable in (but this is not recommended as there is a lot of resistance).

What vintage is your MD2B?

Re: Bedouin\'s age -Volvo

Hi Bedouin, I am certainly thinking of MDIIC rather than "B" although I thought that the configuration was the same - sorry if I am confusing matters.

My engines are circa 1977 and the stop mechanism is a small plunger on the bell housing roughly between the injector pump and the throttle assembly. Pushing in against a spring is the means of stopping the green thing, which also stops the smoke strangely enough.

Ah - definitely a different arrangement.

I should have said, one of the problems with the arrangement on the MD2B is that you need a long "throw" on the stop cable, otherwise you can't get the engine to full throttle. With some of the cheaper stop cables that seems to be a problem.
