As above but you can use any antifouling which is suitable for use on aluminium. These usually contain copper(I) thiocyanate rather than copper(I) oxide.
It is convenient to use a spray can

If Jotun antifouling is your preference then use Aqualine spray.

It depends which colour of barnacle food you want to offer the persistant little B..............
I have tried several receipes on my prop & leg and none seem effective. Worse last year, I think that was because the boat was not used often enough.

If the saildrive housing has its original coating on it then use the primer for the spray can - International or Hempel both have a dedicated primer.

Hi,
aluminum boat antifouling paint, Hempels alusafe, other manufacturers also have products. Anything copper based is not good.

Trilux. However I think it has been discontinued, that said I had no problem getting it online. Sml paints (the jotun people) have their version in a slightly smaller rattle can

All done with a rattle can of Trilux Prop-0-Drev.

Many thanks to all.
How did the Prop-O-Drev do? Would you recommend it? I used Hempel Ecopower but it was pretty much useless. The Prop-o-Drev contains copper thiocyanate which is a biocide and presumably the copper is in a form that does NOT react with aluminium. Anyone know more? It comes in a spray can which on an outdrive is pretty much essential.

Velox or Prop Speed. There is a competitor to Prop Speed, variously called Prop Gold and Prop One. From memory the active ingredient in Velox was the same as Trilux, but in a different concentration.

None of these are particularly cheap, all require following the instructions - exactly.

They all require you to use your vessel frequently - they rely on the fouling not having time to gain a tenacious hold.

If you use a silicone based concoction and you find it does not work as well as you had hoped then you need to ensure you remove all the silicone coating - as nothing will stick to it (excepting more fouling). I think Prop Speed sells a product to aid cleaning.

Once your prop, or sail drive, starts to collect fouling you are on a slippery slope - scraping removes the fouling but also the protective coating. A silicone coating is particularly soft.

Seajet 034 is much better than trilux, straight forward to paint on, I wouldn't say a spray can is essential in my experience.
That's what we have used for the last 8 years and been happy with it. It contains a 2-part primer that seals the surface and then the AF goes on top. The spray-on antifouls give a flatter, smoother finish which you may prefer for the propeller but they don't seem as durable.
