Have the current hull antifoulings been weakened by legislation so much that perhaps they may now be used on props and saildrives without risk of harm to the ali or brass? Has anyone looked ito this?
I have always found the prop specials a ridiculous price and almost totally ineffective,

No, unless they do not contain copper and are specifically formulated for use on aluminium like (expensive) Seajet 043.

The lack of success of antifouling on props (and sail drives) is the lack of frequency of usage of yachts and the incompatibility of the AF we use on our hulls with our propellors and saildrives.

Have you tried Velox, many members here have good reports.

The real issue is we want healthy seas and its inhabitants and our yachts are sacrificed to this desire. Prop Speed, and similar, try to offer an alternative - I have not found them any better (than Velox). Ultra sonics has not proven much of a success.

The answer is a sail drive and prop fabricated from materials compatible with those same AF we use on our hulls.

That's what we have used for the last 8 years and been happy with it. It contains a 2-part primer that seals the surface and then the AF goes on top. The spray-on antifouls give a flatter, smoother finish which you may prefer for the propeller but they don't seem as durable.
I used the 2-part primer in the first year many years ago, but it is expensive for the "outdrive" pack compared to just buying seajet 034 in a larger tin. So I now use Teamac Metaclor Antifouling Primer then two coats of seajet 034 for both the drive and props. With this method, the paints stays on the props with a slight loss on the props edges, after a year in the water I think about 75% of the paint stays on. I have also in the past used hempel underwater primer with similar success. Keep in mind, my boat has duoprops dpe outdrive and cruises around 20knots, so for a sail drive I would expect it to work even better.
