I have an MD2030 with standard rev counter - on my last outing the rev counter stopped working. Later in the day when starting the engine the counter was fine but after a while the needle again dropped to zero.

I have a vague recollection that this may serve as a warning that there may be a fault (alternator, cooling?)

I couldn't find anything in the manual.

Any ideas?

I think I'd be looking for bad connections.
It does take its signal from the W terminal of the alternator so it might be wise to check that the alternator is generating Ok

i also would check this, if its just your counter going wrong then it sounds like the gauge is faulty or loose connection. if the battery alarm is going off when the counter goes to zero then the chances are you have an alternater problem
